I Forge Iron

It followed me home

MJ, you're welcome.  This is a conjunction of two areas of military history for me, artillery and naval history.  If the University of Wyoming had had a Naval ROTC program I would have probably gone inbto that service instead of the Army because my father was in the Navy during WW2.

The USS Wyoming has been an interest because of the state association.  I have drunk from the silver punch bowl (10 gallon capacity) which was part of the silver service given to the ship by the state in 1912.  When the ship was decommissioned the silver service was returned to the state and is now held by the State Historical Museum and Archives.

I see they were expecting a lot of teetotalers on that ship...

I've got a book sale to go to tomorrow; so I went back to the scrapyard today.  Big find was an 8" "Adjustable" C clamp in excellent condition. Also pipe clamp which I will clean up and send to the grandkids, lots of bandsaw blades for pattern welded billets, a sewer snake also for billets, 8' of all thread, some strap stock, good sized coil spring, USW.

I'm always grabbing C clamps when they're reasonable.

I love a good rusty anchor Scott, you haul is looking like a little snub nose with big floppy ears and talons, it just needs something to hold in them.

One of my neighbors (the guy for whom I made those beer tap handles) was clearing out a friend’s storage space and grabbed this stuff for me. If anyone wants some cast iron table bases for making shop  stands, I will probably have the new pieces at Quad-State.

I went to an estate sale yesterday a few minutes down the road. Word is, the homeowners were downsizing. I didn't get to meet them, but from the amount of stuff around, the guy was truly a renaissance man. There was tools and supplies from all sorts of hobbies and professions. he had a large shop with a small office, three or four shipping containers, and a few small storage sheds to pick through. From the literature in his shop office, I'm guessing he was an engineer.

I just kept adding stuff to my pile as I walked around. I didn't really need another post vise, but it was in good shape and only missing the mount bracket and wedge. The drill press looks like it was dropped at some point; the main casting had been broken, but repaired well. The blower is also in good shape, just needs some TLC. Of all the things I found, I think I am most tickled that I found a vintage knife steel with an antler handle.

The man handling the estate sale was pretty familiar with the worth of the large pieces, but he gave me a very fair price after I told him I was a user, not a collector.

This is mostly about what didn't follow me home :-(  Last Friday, I bid online for a bunch of blacksmith and related stuff.  Mostly I was bidding on the Reiter KB1 hammer and it seems that it was me and another bidder only.  I bailed when it got to $7k and regret it now but at the time I was sure the other bidder had a very large bid in already as every time I bid I was immediately outbid.  Buyers premium was 18% and then there would have been the riggers fee to load it on my trailer.  There was lots of good stuff at the auction, tongs, anvils, hammers, forges and stock.  I ended up winning an electric forge blower and a drum of coal and now have to drive about 5 hours round trip to get it.  A friend also bid on and won a bunch of stuff and we were going to go up in one truck to get it all but last night he texted me to let me know he tested positve for covid so no riding together.  My weekend yard sale treasure was a single pick head for a dollar.  I must have close to 100 of them now and my dreams are a fence, gate or sculpture with them all.

Just got back from doin some more swappin an I got a good haul today!

one complete post vise and one junker,

One complete champion 400!
and an one completely disassembled champion 400 in a bucket! Lol

some Random forge tuyere pipes an clinker breaker,

I think the big tuyere pipe is off a Calvary forge that takes that square outlet champion blower, but I could be wrong

a really nice 14” firepot with everything but the ash gate, it has the strangest clinker breaker I’ve ever came across, an the ballon shaped tuyere pipe is new to me also

a canedy otto royal western chief that still has the brass fillers an drain on it! That was a treat, normally when I find those blowers those parts are missin,

An last but not least, a very strange blower I’ve never seen before that I’m gonna post in the blower section for more questions an discussion,7BD2203B-6453-4DF2-BBB8-2093F79B5DC3.thumb.jpeg.3c7fd2b79e322f95f7f0d0943858f34a.jpeg

Just looking through a champion catalog that Randy posted, I was looking to identify somthin else but I saw a picture of some fire pots shaped like that an I believe that fire pot is a champion,

Now I’ll have to build another forge so it has a place to stay! Lol

TW, That looks like the same fire pot in my forge, that I have not been able to identify the maker of. Does the clinker breaker swing in from each side, kinda like a curled hand, to clear the airway?

TW, does the Cannedy Otto blower turn free? I've one just like it that the only problem with it is one of the gears inside seems to be some sort of fibrous material that has swelled up and cracked over time. All the other gears are just a little gummed up but cleaned up well and I'm not sure what to do about the oddball gear... Would like to get it working again though.
