December 21, 20241 yr The top one. It is not straight because one of the holes is a bit off center. I did switch it when i noticed. I had to make i think 40 of them so a couple the holes are not quite on center but after forging out then drilling i just dealt with it rather than making new ones. Same reason i decided to order screws rather than "make" screws. There will be almost 200 screws in this thing when it is done. I did "make" the lag bolts though, spent an afternoon squaring and finishing them, 18, then found i could have ordered them from blacksmiths depot.
December 21, 20241 yr Little imperfections like that show it's hand made. Oh YEAH but square head screws! Making them is a PITA for little reward. Frosty The Lucky.
December 21, 20241 yr Made this for my wife today, top was an old popcorn tin, rails was cut off an old cattle panel cold forged flat. That was a mistake as they cracked when I bent them sharp and had to weld one. Used finish nails as rivits.
December 21, 20241 yr Very nice! I'm guessing you got a goodly number of "husband points" for that one! --Larry
December 22, 20241 yr Pretty nice dat, Momatt. Larry's right that should score you a few with the missus. Frosty The Lucky.
December 22, 20241 yr Momatt - very neat! I made up this horseshoe sunflower today, for a buddy to give his MIL. Nothing special, but they're fun to make. Matt.
December 22, 20241 yr Momatt that looks great nice work. Might have to try one some day and hook up eight forken reindeer to it. Nice sunflower Matt. It will be special to her. On things like that I like to paint them. Some like paint and some like the bare metal look. For me it depends on what it is I guess.
December 22, 20241 yr I agree with Das Matt, large brightly painted flower sculptures look well as yard art and don't usually find a place indoors except maybe a merchant shop or similar. I'll bet if the petals were tilted a LITTLE bit and the stem ended in a weather proof bearing it would spin in a breeze and give the garden or yard a little zing. Hmmm? Frosty The Lucky.

December 22, 20241 yr Das and Frosty - thanks, it is getting painted but my buddy wanted to do the painting. You can't tell from the picture but the head is at roughly 45 degrees. Here's what they usually look like. I do like the spinner idea though! Matt. The sunflower with the wood baseplate had to be built to disassemble for shipping - both ends of the stem are drilled and tapped so that the head and base thread off and on.
December 22, 20241 yr Matt, I like it. My farrier left me with a 1/2 a gallon bucket of shoes last time he was here, I may copy cat you!
December 22, 20241 yr Go for it! They're great for making female relatives happy! Next time ask your farrier for used rasps - he'll probably donate a 5-gal bucket. Matt.
December 22, 20241 yr I turned an old S7 pill punch into a 1/2” drift for an upcoming furniture project. I then used this square punch I found at the antique store and practiced a few holes. Works good but need to shave the drift a bit as 1/2” stock fits a little too loose.
December 22, 20241 yr WOW, THAT'S REALLY YELLOW!!! It's perfect, sun flowers should be bright and tall. If you draw the very end of the stem wide for a few inches then fold it over a couple inches farther up in a hair pin bend, draw the hairpin into a long-ish taper then unfold it starting just into the taper into a 90* you'll be able to pant and remove it from places in the yard by stepping on the tab or prying it up with a shovel. I'd love to see the look on the crabby neighbor's face when she woke up and discovers one of these outside her bedroom window. <evil grin> Good looking punch Pedro, well done! Frosty The Lucky.
December 23, 20241 yr I hear you Alex, there's a large Russian Orthodox community locally and though they keep a low profile the New Years celebrations abound if you know what to look for. So YES take a week or two off, you deserve a break! I don't know of many people as productive as you are. Best wishes and be well my friend. Frosty The Lucky.
December 23, 20241 yr The first thing my kids wanted when we moved into our house was some monkey bars. I had my daughter design them and I made them to suit. The kids are very close to monkeys!
December 23, 20241 yr I hope you're going to forge some staples to spike it down or your kids will be tipping it over if for no other reason than to see if they can. When I was a kid we swung every direction possible and jumping for distance off the top was almost constant. No matter how often we got in trouble. Frosty The Lucky.
December 23, 20241 yr Forged some bolt jaw tongs . https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMkrB9CW3/ Didnt had electricity so was I stoped? Nooo. This time tradition beat technology and modernity. Love that I didi t sold old equipment . Man have to think about everything , even this is not my job, if I had order and had to make something and didn't had tight tool I would rely on this old technology .
December 23, 20241 yr About horseshoes. Had a derp moment yesterday. My daughter came over for Christmas dinner here, she will be out of town from today till next week so we had her and the kids here early, i was telling her that i would like to try and make something from shoes but did not know where to find any. It was kind of comical, almost cartoon like, as she slowly turned towards me and said "Dad, you do realize that i live on a horse ranch, dont you?" DERP My SIL and his family have been raising horses for about 40 years. Sometimes the most obvious is the most elusive.

December 24, 20241 yr I made a little key hook and turned a 12oz ball peen into a little hawk. Lots of fun.
December 24, 20241 yr I like the key hook, very attractive. Nice decorations. I spent part of the day building an oil-quench tank with lid. 6"x6"x12". Holds 1.25 gals quench oil. Matt.
December 24, 20241 yr I really like the key hook Pedro, it's well proportioned, delicate and the incised decorations are very attractive. Well done. Nice looking quench tank Matt having a lid that just drops on is an important fire control feature. Frosty The Lucky.
December 24, 20241 yr Final work 2024. Or maybe not, I'll have time to do something else. Today the wood lift for the fireplace was strengthened. Video.Guru_20241224_201226125.mp4
