  1. We learned early on in law enforcement complacency will get you killed.
  2. Every one I have seen are very loud, like you can hear them from a couple of hundred feet when hammering and they were inside a closed up shop. Any power hammer is loud in operation, I wouldn't operate one without good hearing protection. Maybe someone has measured decibel levels with one. It will also depend upon how close your neighbors are and the insulation in your shop.
  3. Next thing to forge would be a bick to use in the hardy hole to make up for the blunt horn.
  4. Cadmium is right up there with mercury as far as toxicity goes. Think ni-cad batteries.
  5. Welcome to IFI... Have you read this yet? It will help you get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST
  6. Glad I'm not the only one who mutters occasionally when at the anvil.although most of mine are not for public consumption.
  7. No, but it makes a very good ash tray while using the MIG welder.
  8. Another shot of my forge. The hearth/table is made from an old scrounged manhole cover ring and the fire pot is made from fire clay with a steel fire grate. I wouldn't use refractory cement, it's been discussed extensively on the forum. The best fire pot would be constructed from steel plate.
  9. 3D printing is amazing, well out of my wheelhouse, but I saw an article about the U.S Army Corps of Engineers are printing bridges using that technology.
  10. In the read this first thread searching on the forum is covered along with editing your profile to show your location and other hints to get the best out of the forum. BTW my coal forge that I built 35 years ago is made from a semi truck 26 inch rim as the base. Been going strong since but the JABOD and 55 forge are easier to build.
  11. Welcome Bob... Sometimes when you are in the middle of nowhere, you tube can be a big help. However there are a lot of videos that are just down right dangerous when it comes to blacksmithing. Don't know if you have seen this thread but it is a list of blacksmith's that have you tube channels and all of them have been vetted and are good. We especially like jlpservices videos along with Black Bear forge and subscribe to both.
  12. I guess you could call the balls on the end of the reins finials .
  13. Just amazing that we learn new tricks for doing things with every one of your videos. Thirty four or so years in the forge and I have never seen using a pair of scrolling tongs in the hardy hole to hold stock when making twists. It's one of those head slap moments and why didn't I think of that.
  14. When JLP says her anvils are tied down, she means they are tied down.
  15. For starters forget the cement, refractories are covered extensively in Forges 101.
  16. Believe me, steel bands like the leather ones won't dig into that anvil.
  17. I would also break up the lumps of charcoal a little bit.
  18. Works fine in our forge. Angle iron welded together to make a channel.
  19. That is pretty much the shape I forged bit ground like a straight cut hardy.
  20. Welcome to IFI... First of all it would help to know where in the world you are located, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show it. This thread will help you get the best out of the forum. I always suggest reading it. READ THIS FIRST As far as the regulator from a grill, no it will not work for a forge.
  21. Welcome to IFI... joining a group like NWBA would be the best thing for you to do. Hands on experience can't be beat when learning this craft. https://blacksmith.org/
  22. A lot of that stuff has been buried. When we bought our 60 acre place in the woods, it had been logged off in the early 1900s for a RR line the bulldozer turned up a lot of metal axe heads horse shoes and the like putting in our driveway. We figured out where the old logging road and several camp locations were, so I took my metal detector down it and found all sorts of buried goodies wagon parts, tools saw blades etc.
  23. Your son did a fine job on his first bottle opener. As far as forging knives & swords in a JABOD, yes it can be done. You don't want to heat more stock than can be worked at a time.
