  1. You probably need to expand on the "multiple tuyeres" do you mean one pipe with many holes in a bottom blast configuration or more than one pipe in a side blast.
  2. No sticky I know of but this thread is pretty good and the link Glenn posted. https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/45336-electrolysis-tips-welcome/
  3. Looks pretty good. The only suggestion I have would be to move the blower mounting closer to the corner, that way it would be closer to the side you are working off of and you would be able to adjust the handle for a longer throw if you wanted to..
  4. Spend more time with your mentor, for you never know when it will end.
  5. It would help to know where in the world you are located. I suggest reading this. READ THIS FIRST
  6. Welcome James. If you edit your profile to show your location, we won't dunn you for it when answers require knowing where you are located.
  7. From what you described, it would have taken me less than a minute to nix that one. I wouldn't buy a press from anyone that I didn't know their qualifications for building one and if they are selling them I would want documentation on their insurance and references.
  8. I put my touchmark on anything I'm happy with, when I think of it.
  9. Welcome to IFI... Have you read this yet? READ THIS FIRST You should consider making it into a side blast forge, they work better with lump charcoal. Sort of like this one I've started. I still have to clay it up for the fire pot.
  10. I used to get quite a few books from Abebooks, not so much now.
  11. The last time I did that my hand got stuck so no I learned my lesson. What I will say is the edge chip and dents (gouges) are really nothing to your anvil. I'll paraphrase what Glenn says, forge hot metal on your anvil for 2000 hours or a year (which ever comes first) then if you are still unhappy with it do what you want to it.
  12. When I enlarge the last picture it looks like the orifice is oval shaped. Did you run a tip cleaner through it?
  13. Clean it up with a wire wheel on an angle grinder to see if there is any Remanent of the makers mark or serial number on the front foot. Looks like a good anvil and I hope you have read about not doing any grinding, milling or welding on the hardened face. A picture of the under side of the base base will help. Hope you are planning to make him something forged on that wonderful gift.
  14. I like your work bench, looks like mine. My wife always says organized folks are just too lazy to look for things.
  15. The pinned threads have a whole lot of good information in them. Pull up a seat with a sandwich and beverage of choice and get ready for an education. Another way to learn is to find an ABANA affiliated club near you and attend some meetings, nothing like hands on with experienced folk. Get it hot & hit it hard.
  16. That will be hard to answer, without knowing what style of axe you are planning to make.
  17. Nothing will teach you how to forge iron like forging iron. ~ anvil
  18. I made this U-clamp for a vise out of scrap piece of 1/2 inch plate and 1/2 inch all thread welded together.
  19. Ike was 90 and still working in his shop 6 days a week. He only had to stop when he was hit by a car while walking to his shop early one morning. He passed away at 91 due to his injuries.
  20. No temper needed just heat it up & straighten it out. Looks like a good find, oil up the screw and put it to work.
  21. We won't remember your location once leaving this post, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show it.
  22. Welcome to IFI... I always suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST A bunch of steel welded together will not be as efficient as a solid block of steel from a scrap yard or heavy equipment repair shop. You might want to read through the improvised anvils thread.
  23. Hi Chris, I always suggest this thread to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST
