  1. I think that was the beginning of the term Dixie, however when the War Between the States broke out, The term Dixie referred to all the states south of the Mason-Dixon line, the boundary between slave and non slave states, all states south of that line were considered to be in Dixie.
  2. Welcome to IFI. I suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST
  3. They work well with lump charcoal, which takes a lot less air as coal or coke. I've seen them in most stores that carry sporting goods and camping supplies.
  4. Looks like it's running a little rich.
  5. That anvil looks like a good traveling one. I found one listed as a VM brand of anvil on an on line auction site, but it didn't give much info and it sold for 175 Euros.
  6. I would beg, plead, whine and much more to convince them to let me have it.
  7. It's a bushing for different applications. BTW: welcome to IFI. I suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST
  8. I would loose the music (to me it's annoying) and go with the shop sounds. You might take a look at this. BTW, good looking bottle opener.
  9. Welcome to IFI... I always suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST Some better pictures will help especially if you wire brush the paint and junk off the side in the first picture, where logos & other info is located.
  10. Welcome to IFI... I always suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST From what I can see your Trenton is in good shape. Have you read about not grinding, milling or welding on the hardened face? The 138 should be the weight and A3039 is the serial number. I'm sure someone with a copy of AIA (Anvils in America) will chime in with a date range it was made and other info. Might want to post more pictures too.
  11. I asked the guy I bought it from and he said his father served in Germany during WWII and he cut the stock so it would fit in his duffel bag upon returning home. He called it a war trophy and over the years the original piece was lost. Your mates Jaeger is sure a handsome piece ( I love Jaeger's). There is not a false breech.
  12. Thanks, but I think the pictures you posted give me enough to make them. I've plenty of different spring stock and have made a lot of wood & leather tools. If I get boxed in a corner I'll definitely give you a shout. The way we have been doing hidden tangs is to drill pilot holes in the end then use a broach to cut out the webbing, only works for tangs as long as the drill bit..
  13. I don't know if the small balls at the end of the reins have a name but are generally use to keep tong clips from slipping off or decoration. The handles are called reins and the part the rivet goes through is the boss and the jaws or bits (either is correct) begin past the rivet where the stock is fullered or drawn out. Thomas is right and both of those references are available as downloads for free.
  14. I showed these to her and she said "I'm not quite there yet, but ya I'll want those".
  15. My metal cutting band saw is over 30 years old. The last and only time I had the gear box cover off it had what looked like White Lithium Grease in it. That's what I went with at least ten years ago and it's still going strong. Probably time to check on it again. Thanks for the reminder.
  16. Next up from him. Quenching in pigeon droppings.
  17. Welcome to IFI, I suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST Where in the world you are located may have something to with identifying your anvil, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show location. Other good tips about reducing the size of pictures so folks from the 150 different countries who are on dial up or pay for bandwith won't be upset. Your anvil looks to be in very good shape and only needs a wire brushing to clean it up and hot steel hammered on it to shine the face. I hope you have read about not doing any grinding, milling or welding on the hardened face. Wire brushing with an angle grinder may bring out better markings. I'm sure those who have more experience with anvils will chime in but as it stands we can only guess.
  18. My wife just took a knife making class and asked me to make her a hidden tang handle broach. Pretty easy out of a broken saws-all blade.
  19. Ringing the anvil three times for a speedy recovery with the help of the Goddess, God, and Great Spirit.
  20. Welcome Nyckname, If you edit your profile to show your location we won't dun you for it when the answer depends upon it. This thread will help you get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST
  21. Yes, especially when you have to indenture your first born for a bottle.
  22. Been there done that, both knives have the pins too close to the front of the scales.
  23. I have to ask. What did you use to cut the tank that didn't cause it to explode?
