Sorry I should have though to list my steel types, my bad. The steels used are 1085 and L6 (band saw blade) and ended with about 176 layers. I annealed by heating to cherry red and shutting off forge the gas forge enclosing front and back with fire brick and leaving over night. When I shut the forge down the inside was glowing bright yellow so I know it took a while to cool down.

I had a few small pieces of damascus I forged and formed them into tear drops for my sister to use making jewerly (the pieces are about the size of a dime). My problem is drilling a hole in them. I used a NEW 3/16" colbolt drill bit and it did not go through. I used cutting oil on the drill bit but after about 10 sec. it started to squeel and smoke. I did not heat treat the damascus after forging but did annealed it. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help. William

Travis Wuerts uses the baking lacquer from brownells and dose a very light sanding with a fine sand paper to expose the nickel highlights. The lacquer holds up very well and I saw a few knives and they still looked new.

Messerist Great job in your discription of the process awsome looking knife.

I saw a show on them on the discovery channel and according to them the knives hald a great edge but are brittle, you can break one by dropping it. The manufacture that was shown did add enough metal to set of alarms for security reasons.

Very nicely done and I understand the labor I did some tapering of thick metal and you did a beatiful job of the tapering.

I understand it is possible to straighten antler does any one know how? I have a nice piece of antler with to much curve and would like to take some of the curve out. Thanks for any help William

I forged a blade from a chain saw chain, ground it, and heat treated it. I then did the final grind and cleaned it with acetone then etched it in Muratic Acid. The problem is the blade near the handle etched beatifully but the tip just turned a silver gray with no contrast. You can see the layers but not the contrasting black and silver like the rest of the blade. Any ideas what I may have done wrong. Thanks William

Here is a picture of a tomahawk I made from a torsion bar from a dodge truck. It has held up very well and is being carried by my nephew (he is in a ranger unit in Afganstan). The camp ax is made from a leaf spring folded and forged welded.

Finnr: Forgive my ignorance but how do you pour the bolster with wood in place? Can you post a few pictures of the process? Also wont the melted pewter burn the wood? Thank you for your patients with me.

most of the frau's I knew could wade into a fray at your frat and knock you FLAT
