John Martin Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 (edited) Excellent knife art, what's it made out of, any dimensions? What do you mean pewter bolster cast in place??? Could you please explain that? EDIT: FINNR, I attached the pics, since it didn't work last night. Edited January 14, 2009 by m_brothers Quote
J Anderson R Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Nice Knife! That cherry burl is beautiful. Quote
Finnr Posted January 14, 2009 Author Posted January 14, 2009 (edited) The blade is four inches long and the over all length is eight and a half inches. The mix is pallet strap and bandsaw blade. The bolster was cast right on the knife using tape as a mold for the molten pewter. It works beautifully. Finnr Edited January 14, 2009 by Finnr spelling Quote
Finnr Posted January 15, 2009 Author Posted January 15, 2009 Thanks fellows. Especially Woody, I have admired your work for quite some time so praise coming from you is a very treasured thing. Finnr Quote
NOS Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 Finnr, that knife is a thing of beauty! I hope to be able to make some like that one day. Quote
triw Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 I agree a very beatiful knife and I love the way you did the antler and cherry wood very nicely done. I am also interested in how you cast the pewter bolster. Thanks for sharing William Quote
civilwarblacksmith Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 Yes a very beautiful knife. I also would like to know how you did the bolster. Have an idea how to, but would like to here from someone more experienced in making them. Quote
Messerist Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Nice sticker Finnr. Especially the antler wood combination Quote
Finnr Posted January 16, 2009 Author Posted January 16, 2009 Casting the bolster is extremely easy. I just wrap some tape around the handle to form a simple mold and pour in melted pewter. You can also use an index card or a scrap of cardboard from the cheerios box. The pewter will not burn through unless you have overheated it to teh point of destroying the alloy. Finnr Quote
civilwarblacksmith Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 That's what I thought. Works the same way if you are pouring a butt cap onto the knife. Cool. Is it done first before the wood is put on or leave a space when adding the wood in order to keep the bolster flat against the wood? Quote
Finnr Posted January 16, 2009 Author Posted January 16, 2009 I pour with the wood in place that way I am sure it all fits together. Finnr Quote
steveh Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 HI Finnr. When you melt your pewter do you add any flux to it.I have a pewter vase that I was going to use for the same thing, are there different grades of pewter? Thanks. Quote
leroyk Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 hey finnr i would like to hear a little more about your bolster and where do you get the pewter leroy Quote
triw Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 Finnr: Forgive my ignorance but how do you pour the bolster with wood in place? Can you post a few pictures of the process? Also wont the melted pewter burn the wood? Thank you for your patients with me. Quote
Finnr Posted January 18, 2009 Author Posted January 18, 2009 Scorching isn't a problem. There have been several hawks posted in teh forums that also use poured in place pewter for decoration. It is a fun project. Finnr Quote
