    Patch knife?

I am trying to find information on what was called a "patch knife". I saw one several years ago and would like to find designs. The one I saw was worn around the nice and had a short blade about 2" long. It was used to cut the patch material used on a muzzle loader The unique feature was it folded into a piece of antler when it hung. Does anyone have any more information on the design of this knife? Thanks William
  2. It usually doesn't get that cold in Arizona but when it does I use an electric iron I picked up at a yard sale for a buck. I sit that on the anvil face and by the time my steel is hot it has taken the chill out of my 300 lb anvil.
  3. I named my forge "Broken Chain Forge" based on Isa 58:6 some translations say break the chains of bondage.
  4. I went to a blacksmiths shop to see about getting a camp fire set made. I watched him making some items for a craft show he was going to. I asked if I could try and he let me. The first thing I forged was a hoof pick for my wife and I was hooked. Then I went to Frank Turleys school in New Mexico and the first day he had us make a new horse shoe out of two used ones. Forge welding them into one. That was a lot of fun. William:)
  5. Tom It is about 5 to 6 inches in diam. I am not sure what part of the plane it came from. How would I get a hold of Mr. Nowak? Thanks William
  6. My daughter is in the Navy working on the aircraft P3. A friend of hers sent me a few bearings from the plane to make her a knife from. I used the bearing race to make the knife. My question is what kind of metal is this and how do I heat treat it? I wrote the manufacter but I have not heard back. Any ideas? Thank you William Weathersby
  7. I heard and have used coal soot mixed with wax on my ornamental ironwork. I think I heard this from Frank Turley.
  8. I am trying to make a tomahawk from 1" round stock. I square the stock then drive my cutting chisel through the hot steel. At this point the hole looks good, with even amount of metal on each side. Now when I drive my drift through the right side (with blade facing me) buldges out more then the left. I have done this twice and both time I got the same results. Any suggestions? Any ideas how to true up the hawk heads I have drifted? Thanks for you help. William Broken Chain forge
  9. Hello form sunny northern Arizona. I have been playing at being a blacksmith for several years, Went to Frank Turleys school in New Mexico about 6 years ago and been a fun hobby. Learned to make knives by taking a couple of classes taught by Ray Rybar a master bladesmith. Am trying to make my first tomahawk for my nephew who is serving in a ranger outfit in Afganstan. (He requested one for Christmas) Found this site looking for plans to make a guilatine style tool to help me while I work alone.
