  1. Idea borrowed. Scaled down would make a pretty cool adjustable racking system for all sorts of things. My roommate sews & might use it to hang all her spools, large & small.
  2. jbolduc, you obviously got everybody interested & excited - unique tool in very good condition DSW, send him a carton of rigid urethane foam in a can, some nice release film from a craft supply & a case of beer. A foam pattern wouldn't be much shipping.
  3. Thomas, I just don't know. Between inlay & caulk, the stump won't budge with a timber & 8# sledge. I'm like you, stumps are hard to come by, so I don't really want to take a saw to it.
  4. winebaby, that was a great find & price. That gem hasn't seen much use in 150 years b4utoo, I'm betting the r/h vise in your top picture is a Columbian. Find anything on top of the triangular mount plate?
  5. Been awhile lads, but here's my new gf. Between the stump inlay, caulk, chain & turnbuckle, I liken to not have got to the base for S/N but a backsaw did the trick. A lad on another forum thinks she might be a hardware co variety of HB. What says yáll? Shes my living room anvil. Only 78 pound, but with the post oak stump brings her up to about 135. Light enough to slide about, but heavy enuf to make wall hooks, etc. Guests don't trip over the lass but onec't.
  6. Mr Power's Anvil Aquisition Techiques - applied... ^.^ TPAAAT You listen to the old fartsmiths here & you will be well on your way. Even when they (we) get crusty.
  7. I only have a small rivet forge with fire bricks to deepen the sweet spot, but I just set a 2# coffee can over the coals & water around the outside. Stuff a dry rag in the blower inlet & the coals extinguish pretty quick. Less digging around & moving the hot stuff & saves me enough coals to start the next fire.

    NC anvil

  9. Same little screamer, sans the turning cams. Bedded in silicone caulk & chained with a cedar spacer beam. No more ringing. Heel is still a bit shrill, but tolerable. http://www.iforgeiron.com/gallery/image/37306-nc-anvil/
  10. Thanks for thinking of us on IFI & taking the time to post those pictures. Selfless service as always.
  11. Seems to be shaped like my W.B.B & Co. I'll get the lad to take a picture of it when he gets in from school. Mine has stamps similarly located on her feet but a spread 78 across the manufacturer's marks.
  12. Don't feel foolish for asking advice here, but take the time to add your location to your profile. You might be pleasantly surprised how many like-minded folks are close to you.
  13. Hang in there. Ain't met you yet hoss, so still have work to do. Tell the family we're thinkin' of them over here a bit in Texas. You take care & keep forging.
  14. Yup, wow. *tips hat* to Mr Einhorn. Well done, sir.
  15. I tried calling yesterday after the online store link appeared broken; the recording said teh number had been disconnected. :-/
  16. Congrats Ric! I'm a big fan of you & Geek&Sundry as well.
  17. Yep, 2nd from left; I have it's big brother. Is the 3rd from other side of the pond? Seems I see the lad's ~
  18. Just my 2copper pieces, that is a nice buy. Adjust your profile to include your location & you might be surprised at the number of smiths close to you. Welcome & howdy!
  19. Are these aluminum or steel? Thin sheet metal like these are why I bought my old ASO about thirty years ago. 4000+ gov't tool tags. Does your son son have a punch holder? A hard surface, like a proper anvil will cut the tags. A soft, cast ASO will allow the stamps to make proper impressions without distorting the thin dogtags. Maybe the only use for a cast iron "anvil"
  20. Hooks make good starter projects & are always handy. Make nice gifts to friends.
  21. get another stump & save this one for the 1-1/2 inch taller anvil you're sure to wind up with.
  22. I have a 14yo kinder cousin that's curious. Thankfully my family runs long on firebugs; just have to direct the interest.
  23. Years ago, I made one about the same size from an electrical enclosure. Worked like a champ using hydraulic oil for the high flash point. Even so, the lid put a stop to flash fires. Just don't make a tight seal so the gases can vent.
  24. That surely turned out beautiful. I'd be handsawing a stump over the weekend. Wouldn't take too many barleypops.
