  1. The hammer will be placed in Brian Brazeal's collection of tools made by young blacksmiths he has taught . He asked me to will it to him and I IMMEDIATLY offered to trade it for one made by him! Sir Alec agreed, as did Brian . I did not want anyone waiting for my demise for any reason! So it moves on!
  2. Great y'all can car pool to Baton Rouge Saturdays , hah! Cher`e!!
  3. Any Saturday I am ready to welcome all who got the addiction of hot metal , bring your favorite hammer . I can set you up with one of four anvils , a Hay budd, an Emmerson, a Brooks , or a Mousehole . Forges, a coal , a charcoal , a propain ,and a blown natural gas . Most times I am alone ,( bad breath I guess) and see no reason to stay past noon . If anyone wants to come call (225) 927-9800 before Saturdays , Y'all come!
  4. Come to Baton Rouge ! open forge is any Saturday all is welcome, I got lotta toys for us to play with and much materials too.
  5. Frank , write a book, please ! you know so much that needs to be passed on.
  6. You might try a twister like this to make the twist go all the way to the head of the spike .http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/21373-twister-for-rail-road-spikes/?hl=%2Br.r.+%2Bspike+%2Btwister
  7. Daniel I got the hammer you and Sir Alec forged for me, It is great ! Better than I had hoped for. Brian sure can teach, and young blacksmiths like you and Alec ARE the future of our craft. It will be a bright future. This hammer is a treasured addition to my tool kit . A valuable addition seeing the prices asked for them. Mine is NOT for sale , nor will it ever be. Thanks for all the care and craftsmanship you two put into it.
  8. Way back when I started my biz in 1994 I bought a Rigid 590 12" carbide tip chop saw and 2 extra blades. the 590 turned slow ,1800 rpms and cut dry , and clean steel chips were the only mess ,no smoke. Rigid does not make these kind of saws anymore. I think Jepson makes a 12" blade , and still available . All the other manufactores are making a 14" carbide blade. That set of blades have been re-sharpened so many times the carbide that is left looks like a paint layer. The smoke still stays in that old saw,it does not seem to be dying anytime soon, but let me buy another 12" blade... It will be a lot slower than what it took 19 years ago, and I would have to very lightly guide the saw down now but that saw has cut 2" rounds before and could still do it. I will be buying another carbide tip saw .
  9. I been dreaming of a barge made of two 40' containers with a big open space between them for raising sunken logs here in the swamp .
  10. My wife is going to England next week to visit her mum and to pick up a hammer that Alec S. made for me , I hope you taught him well Brian! I am really looking foreward to using a Brazeal Banger !I just gotta find a short piece of galvanized water pipe to weld on it for the handle, and I'll be fixed up

  12. I think it depends on your experience and what kind of power hammer you are using. I have a Little Giant 100 . I hesitate to do much top tool work in it , I have put work in the hammer holding it in my right hand and using a 11/2" round bar about 16" long in my left hand fullered detail in leaves. Scarey ! A L.G. does not STOP imediatly, if something got away from me it could fly out and hit you upside the head. Risk is some of the excitement of heating and beating steel. I think an air hammer would have more control and do that easier.
  13. You are welcome Steve , a good time was had by all. Open forge at Arnold & Anvil Blacksmiths every Saturday in Baton Rouge Y'all come!
  14. Water piped in from the mains. Adjust a hose to just a tiny trickle dripping on the ends of work you want to be kept cool in the gas forge. Works great!
  15. A treadle hammer is a fine tool to have in the shop. You will find somewhat of an athletic event if, like me you be short ,fat, and old. Standing on one leg and doing the " treadle dance''cannot be called easy. An artist was in my shop for a while , he brought one. For bashing hot, small angle iron into cattail leaves , using a piece of pallet hardwood on top to preserve the sharp angle ridge , It was ideal.Get that one or make one and you will find it very usefull.
  16. A beautiful folder. I would buy that one!
  17. I have an Emmerson anvil an ex student abandoned at my shop . It is a very fine anvil and came with a tri-pod stand. very nice, and SHARP point on the horn. I do not know what they cost, Probably a lot.
  18. Welcome to IFI ! I welcome you to my shop here in Baton Rouge any day I am there ; Arnold & Anvil Blacksmiths, 6112 Pino St. Baton Rouge .(225) 927-9800. You are not far from Covington La. The Gulf Coast Blacksmiths Association meets there at Buddy Leonards shop. Look them up and Join! There are plenty blacksmiths down here, all I have met are very welcoming to newbies. Good Luck!
  19. Too hot, first hit too hard. Too bad. At least the material was free.
  20. Welcome to IFI ! I hope you enjoy your journey into the mysteries of black smithing. For coal there are several options for you to have coal shipped to you. Glenn Conner sells and ships coal , Glen is the webmaster and head man for I forge Iron. and sources of coal are on E-Bay as you found. For your forge idea , go ahead and try it . I would not make a firepot so shallow, and so long. the deeper fire welds best with coal and forges best with charcoal. Many groceries and discount stores carry lump charcoal, don't use briquettes.
  21. Welcome to the world of blacksmithing. Soon you will be able to make BRANDS ! A new line of skin art for your tattoo artist hubby to offer.
  22. A gate should be a delightful passage for the invited. A joy to behold from all aspects near and far. a bar to the uninvited and a restraint for beasts. You have done well ma'am.
