SLAG
Mr. Powers, Make up a sample library set and you have at least one customer. Namely ME. Regards, SLAG.
ThomasPowers
I'll try to get a list of what's there this summer; biggest problem would be cutting it up they are substantial chunks and mine is currently a non powered shop...came from when they tore down the old welding engineering building at OSU and I helped clear it out of stuff they were not transferring to the new campus. Hmm titanium and polaris missile sub hull too...
Michael Cochran
I too would be interested in a sample library.
ThomasPowers
The way to do this so it's not excessively expensive would be for say 10 people to all make 10 samples and then meet at someplace like quad-state and trade them. I make way too much money as a software engineer to want to spend every weekend for a month or more cutting slices off large chunks of steel and stamping them to sell at less than I would a pattern welded blade made in less time. Let me make an inventory of what I have and then perhaps we can work a trade. It would be a couple of weeks till I get to the shop
JME
It didn't exactly follow me home but I got a nice Happy Present today. Needs a little work but... hehehe
Judson Yaggy
Happy day! #1 Champion power hammer for a good price. Even better it was 3 dirt roads west of my place and the seller is an interesting fellow who will be fun to get to know. First pic disassembled and laying down on a skid for a rest, my helper is trying to get it sliding towards the truck. If I could just remember where I left that whip... All loaded up and strapped down. My boy picked up one end I got the other and we slid it right in. Drove pretty slow on the way home. Worst damage to the machine is the unusual die modification, everything else is pretty crisp.
JHCC
That's a horrible looking machine. If you just drive it out to Ohio, I'd be happy to take it off your hands for proper disposal.
Judson Yaggy
Would take me about 2 years to drive to Ohio at 25 mph, bout all I wanted to do on washboard dirt roads with a 1100 pound hammer (plus rigging and 350 pounds of people) in a half ton pickup. But if you are willing to wait I'll start west tonight. Will call when I get close.

Michael
Was out walking the dogs early for Independence Day, before they were scared under the couch. Came across 60 feet of 3/8 inch round stock at the curb a few blocks from home. Came back with the car, the lady of the house came out to tell me "won't fit in a car, you need a truck, that's how I got it home". She was right, the rings were 5 feet in diameter, not fitting in the Volvo. Back home for the wagon and some clamps. It was only about 6 blocks so a little drag wasn't a problem. She said it was "hi carbon steel, oh yeah, from around an old wooden hot tub". Well, it cuts and welds like mild steel, Made a handle for my forge shovel and some chain links from it. interesting , offset nuts on the ends of the 16 foot lengths, can't think of what to use them for but they look useful. Love burning coal in the suburbs on the Fourth of July!

plain ol Bill
Looks like wooden tank straps. I had a bunch of them years ago after an old redwood water tank was torn down.
Michael Cochran
My wife and I went to the local auction yesterday for their big estate sale they had where we run into another one of our members an his wife. I left with a new hammer perfect for a striker to use (if only I had a striker). The handle, to the bottom of the hammer head, is 23 inches long and the head measures 2 1/8"x2 1/4"x7". I have not weighed it but it feels like it's a little lighter than my 8 lb sledge hammer so I'm guessin get about 7 lbs. It looks to me like the faces are welded on the body. I didn't see any markings I'd liked to but I did find what looks to be a name that was marked using dots. From what I can see from the sunlight at differing angles it looks like it says 'Elliot.' ThomasPowers
Steel samples redux: I sat down in the steel building in over 100 degF temps with a lot of sun and recorded the steel blocks I have holding down one of my work benches: Top: HSLA 80 slab HSLA 150 slab Right Side: 1020 3 ¼ x 3 ½ x 1 1060 3 x 5 ½ x 1 1060 3 x 15 x 7/8 1060 3 x 13 x ¾ 1070 3 ¼ x 9 ½ x 1 ½ 1070 3 ¼ x 11 x 1 ½ 1070 3 ¼ x 11 x 1 ½ 2335 3 x 12 x 1 ½ 2345 3 ½ x 9 x 1 ½ 2345 3 ¼ x 9 x 1 ½ 3140 3 ¼ x 9 x 1 ½ 3140 3 x 14 ½ x 1 ½ 3335 3 x 12 x 1 ½ 4165 3 x 13 ½ x ¾ 4340 2 x 3 x 6 odd tapers 4615 3 ¼ x 10 x 2 taper 8650 3 x 14 ½ x 1 8650 3 x 14 ½ x 1 8650 3 ¼ x 12 ½ x 1 Left Side: 1030 3 x 9 x 1 ½ 1030 3 ¼ x 10 x 1 ¼ 1045 3 ¼ x 8 x 1 ¾ 1045 3 ½ x 9 x 1 ¼ 2345 3 ¼ x 9 x 1 ¾ 2345 3 ¼ x 12 x 1 ¾ 2345 3 ¼ x 12 x 1 ¾ 2345 3 ¼ x 12 x 1 ¾ 3140 3 x 9 x 1 ½ 3140 3 x 9 x 1 ½ 3140 3 x 10 ½ x 1 ½ 3140 3 x 6 ½ x 1 ½ 4165 3 x 11 ½ x ¾ 4165 3 x 3 1/2/1 ½ 4165 3 x 5 x 1 ½ 4165 3 x 6 x 1 ½ 4165 3 x 6 ½ x 1 ½ 4165 3 x 12 ¾ x ¾ 4165 3 x 12 ¾ x ¾ 4165 3 ¼ x 4 ¾ x 1 ½ 4165 3 x 13 ¾ x ¾ 4615 3 ¼ x 10 x 1 7/8 4615 3 ½ x 10 x 1 ¼ 8650 3 ¼ x 6 x 1 8650 3 x 9 x 1 8650 3 ¼ x 12 x 1 8650 3 ½ x 15 x 2 see why I don't want to cut samples from them by hand? ThomasPowers
That should be available to you already! Now I wish I had picked up the rest of the sample library but carrying it out of the basement was a chore and time was limited. (I just looked up 3335 to see what it might be used for besides a weight....)

winterbear
Across the alley from the gas station on my way into work yesterday there was a pile of leftover yard sale kinda stuff with a free sign propped up against it. And what do I spy in the back corner but a 14" Dewalt metal chop saw on a steel stand. Cut off the mangled cord and threw a new end on the good section of cord and she turns right on! part of the adjuster on the back part of the vise is busted off but otherwise just weathered and faded. A chop saw was on the list to buy so this saves me a fair chunk of change and will make processing the wagon rims down to salable sizes for the upcoming seattle blacksmith swap much easier. Chris , Pics tonight I forgot last night
Yuppiejr
32" diameter, 4" wide grindstone, thank you ($56 winning bid). The stand is obviously not original (treated 4x4's) but all of the hardware that goes with it was included in a cool "Made in Occupied Japan" wooden ration crate. Mtnstream
So nice that lift kits at 4X4 shops require new springs...gives me fodder for the forge!
Jackdawg
These followed me home the other day. Oil refinery we work next to is being closed down. They reckon it is cheaper to stick them on a pallet in the parking lot with a "free" sign on them than pay to dispose of them. Hundreds of them going. Had six when I bought them home, but friends and family........ Can't have to many of these around the workshop !.
Mark Ling
Another quick stop at the scrap yard yielded some items. some files (one of them is the thickest I've ever seen being 3/8" thick) a very large crow bar, saw blades, chain, and a few other items. Michael Cochran
While headed to a yard sale my wife saw online we spotted a treadmill on the side of the road. She asked me, 'you've been looking for one of those have to you?' So we loaded it up in the trunk of a 2001 cavalier (half of it was hanging out) and drove it 4 miles back to the house. Unfortunately I didn't look before we loaded it but it has a 1.25 HP DC motor so I'll either have to figure out how to build a rectifier for it to build shop equipment or I may just have to use it for what it was meant for.
