  1. Rusty you missed the Zinc coat pre primer :wacko: LOL sub primer then red oxide then epoxy :rolleyes:
  2. weld the right size sq tube into the hardie top & bottom make sure its plum !! !! there not often !!!!! grind or file to plum !! & be done with it / arc rod 7018 or better I have 2 anvils done this to all my hardie tools are 1" other PW was 15/16 ground it out to 1" that's alot of fun LOL my portable PW has a 7/8 hardie that needs to be !" yet to be done :o WAY MORE FUN NOT ! Steve's Welding PS thicker wall sq tube is better
  3. when I have to weld a broken trailer leaf spring together I use 110-18 pre heat weld area post heat NOT something I like to do ! but sometimes no choice & have had good luck & there still out there working last time I looked :) note a good welder always ck his work from years back to see how it doing, kinda like ck-ing on the kids lol 308 or 309 SS is also an Idea
  4. Frosty I talked to Bill on the another forum good Info there, I have found a good massage board in the Melting pot for g;ass workers ?? I am still looking for a live chat room for torch workers goggle came up with massage boards not live chat :( Big gun I am looking to get in to glass torch work = lamp work not glass blower / glory hole with melted glass cost WAY !!! more in fuel & tools for now LOL I sure would like to try hot glass blowing at least once though that is a hole other thing ! :wub: chinobi to me slumping glass in a kiln in a mold is boring & to easy other than the art design of the piece its like stain-glass just hotter not where I want to go lamp work is many things sculpture, thing made out of tubing ,marbles ,beads & so on -- a cheap sort of way to be a glass blower with out the full shop thing witch is very costly !!!
  5. I am wondering if there are any glass smiths among us in are blacksmiths group on IFI ?? Why do you ask well I have the need for all things HOT !! :o & I am looking @ / working on setting up a lamp working station for larger stuff to go with my metal working down the line I am a newbie to this kind of work ! yet I am not LOL ! :wub: In all that I do smithing welding & other stuff art wise its steering me to PLAY with glass :) also as a kid I always watched the glass blower ! WAY !!! before I got the NEED for STEEL more or less my parents had to drag me away LOL from the glass blower so its time to play !!!! and learn !! glass Now if threes enough interest in glass here maybe Glen will set up a page for glass smiths ?? What do you think ? PS anyone know of any good sites to look @ another then Melting Pot looking for live chatroom for glass to learn ?   6. heavy eqt like a cats use a ball knuckle on the blade to the ram they brake often & must be replaced any place that works on trucks or heavy eqt is a gold mine for odd shape forms to make tools out of & the steel is on the high end cause of what the piece needs to go through in its life

I tell them nope i tried shoeing my wolfs once & it didn't work out well for me so I stopped shoeing amimanls :D that gets them ! :o AW then there's the second ? wait for it you know its coming ---- do you make swords ?? LOL & would you make me one ????????????? other than the first two ? after that I tell them a blacksmith dose everything else in metal NEED to put that on a card & just hand them out LOL :rolleyes: ** worms anyone lol

  12. welding rods -- Stoody Rod 1105 or 2110 are what to use, Search IFI for Rod Gunther anvil repair/ welding I used 1105 All the Info you need is there !! I have repaired over 50 anvils this way, NO problems some are still in Heavy use @ a teaching school--- Repaired wow 10 years ago :) aprox there in good shape ! I ck them out once a year when they have a hammer in there I go to & there use by folks that don't know how to use an anvil right yet daily that says something about Rod Gunther way to fix an anvil !!!! STEVE'S Welding PS-- Hard face & Stainless rods ** WRONG !!! do you're homework !! its in the anvil page somewhere !! #2 if you can't get stoody there then call them talk to the rod tech I did & get Info on 1105 & try & match it with something on you're side of the pond

I meet Jim 3 time's He was one of those that made smithing seam easy / yea right ! WOW !! + Very Sad on the news :mellow: I meet Jim when I started smithing @ one of are local Jefferson Smith Hammer Ins twice he was the wheel wright guy & A great smith ,He has earned his place @ the forge an Anvil AS MANY ! others HAVE * * think about it -- Hmm a bunch of pasted smiths trying to LOL out due them self's :D LOL YES there are many here that knew him ! I think He was one of the ones with the first group's of the Northern Ca Jefferson Smith MY Prayers go to his family & my anvil will ring tomorrow

  18. Ok got a ?? is there a certain rpm you should shoot for to spin ? if so what is it ?? I have thought about spinning over the years cause few do it, I will need to make the tools no problem have a welding shop my lathe is a Large !! La Bond 24" swing 10' table only thing is the new back gear for low low speed work is on the shelf witch means a total tear down of lathe to put it in, that needs to be done someday but other things are more important Unless theres a need or use for it that makes money I can run a lathe but in no way will I call myself a machinist ! there is no machine work here anymore :( so the lathe sits :( its way to good a machine to junk & hard to move lol also have a mill that sits
  19. I CHEAT I forge weld / Tig weld :o stainless steel on ends then PH it where food come in contact with BBQ tool the rest is steel seasoned with oil AM I Bad LOL :rolleyes:

Here's a trick I weld a stainless 3/8 x3/4 bolt to the top of an old pair of vice grips for a grounding clamp works good *** NOTE *** only thing is if welding on something that you move into the shop & take out when done like a trailer or somthing remember to take ground clamp off !!! OR you will see you're welder follow the trailer out the door LOL :unsure: I have seen this twice @ the Old mans shop pulled the old heavy Lincoln welder right off the top of the fringe it sits on 5' drop to concrete floor ouch ! Hay its a Lincoln & keeps on welding he's done it twice I know of lol
