  1. Stunning. I love the finish on the copper and the fit and finish over all is top shelf for sure.
  2. A gift for my SIL made from a concrete edging trowel, 1/8” thick, no forging except I added the peen marks for interest. It may be a higher carbon as a quench test found water too aggressive and it got reasonable hard with oil quench. Tempered at 450 in my toaster oven. Got it pretty sharp and it works a treat. Thanks for looking.
  3. Looks really nice Rick How well does it work? You should post a vid of it running 50 pounds sounds plenty heave to me
  4. Very nice. I can't tell if it has 5 or 6 wires in the basket
  5. Got the corded model. just wow! Cut through a RR spike under 9 seconds! now to make a stand
  6. Looks like wrought iron with a steel face to me. Look for cracks or signs that the face plate is loose. Tap it lightly all over with a small hammer and listen to the sound. If it has a crack or if the face plate has some separation you may hear a muted ring or clunk. Should have a loud, long lasting ring even when tapping on the feet. Nice looking anvil from here. Good luck
  7. Or maybe someone tried to add one. Did you ever get that slot sorted out?
  8. When I was first starting, I found a 5 pound ball peen hammer at the swap meet. It didnt have a handle and she wouldnt come down from $15 so I walked. Been looking for one since.
  9. Good stuff everyone. DHarris that chain looks great to me. I hope mine will be as good. not a lot if time lately but was able to get a few hours in. I got 3 1”x8” H-13 rods from the ebaeys and holy cow! This is the hardest steel I have ever forged and I wore my arm out after using a 4 hammer, had to go back to my 2.5 favorite. Going to be a hot cut chisel. I need a power hammer
  10. I like Latticinos advice. Have him him forge one from a ball peen. He will quickly find out that he has a lot to learn and if he is capable he might end up with something nice.
  11. The biggest thing I would miss from my anvil would be the hardy hole which could be improvised. I would buy an anvil if I were you. You wont be able to ruin it and all the marks and dings you put on it will be yours plus you will have all the function of a traditional anvil to learn on. Not to mention the cool factor and having a tool that could be in the family for many generations. My 2 cents, your thousand dollars or so :-)
  12. Very nice stand. Anvil looks nice too. How's the rebound?
  13. I finished my straight peen. 2lbs-2oz. started with 4” of 1-3/4” round 1045. Quenched in water and tempered to dark bronze/peacock with a red hot drift. Made the handle from a piece of broken sledge handle Seems to work good but I wish I had centered the eye a little more front to back. Cant wait to forge with it. I added some progress pictures for fun this is the punch and drift I used to get to my eye drift. Both made from S7 pill punches acquired from Larry Z. this is my eye drift made from a jack hammer bit. May not be tapered enough, will see how the handle holds up. I think the heat treat came out perfect I beat in this 1/2” mild rod cold and it left no marks what so ever. Super happy Thanks for looking
  14. PaulF, How about a picture of your 180 pounder? Thats a nice size
  15. I would put a waste gate in that hose to regulate the air. Worked for my first forge, bottom blast and hair dryer burning charcoal. Have fun!
  16. I can understand wanting a new anvil and I have no regrets buying one. I started with a 100# vulcan and it worked well but I always worried about beating on it too hard as it has a few chips. When I was shopping it came down to the Rigid and Kanca. For some reason I wanted a forged anvil and those are the only ones not cast today. The Kanca was about $40 cheaper but I much prefer the horn shape of the Kanca v. Rigid and that sealed the deal for me. That said and I know my anvil is all I will ever need, I want a big old American show piece. A 400# Fisher is my dream anvil (for now)
  17. Nice blades JP. I heat treated my straight peen hammer. Tempered with a hot drift and I think it turned out perfect. while waiting on cooling cycles, I made a few s hooks. My missus cant get enough s hook as she gives them away with her glass art. super happy with my hammer. I dont have a little scale but will take it to work to weigh. I guess about 2 pounds. thanks for looking
  18. No minimum temp on the controller. Accuracy at lower temps may be an issue but I doubt it. Seems fairly sophisticated and you can hear the relay cycling at very short intervals when holding temps, higher temps anyway.
  19. That kiln will work just fine. We have the same controller on ours and it is very programable. I want to say mine is max 1850f but will hold, ramp and cycle any temp you want. We just got ours and I have been having alot of fun fusing glass. Havent used it to heat treat yet. Mine is much bigger and the glass firing schedules are quite long and the wife is hoarding the time. Fused glass goes through annealing and tempering cycles too. Usually hold 900f for an hour the cool at 100f per hour to 700f then cool as slow as possible to room temp. Afterwards, the glass object (coe96 glass) will bounce on the tile floor like a super ball!
  20. Sorry to disagree but upsetting a piece of 1" square does indeed sound like fun
