  1. Super nice! I hear the average is like six months from getting a lathe to buying a milling machine
  2. Made a magic wand for my DIL who is into dungeons and dragons. RR spike and glass. I think it turned out great. also started a door knocker again from RR spikes. Real fun day thanks for looking
  3. Keep an eye on it Frosty, cat bite can be real nasty for infection.
  4. Very nice. Really like the Ironwood. Bunch of Iron wood in the lower desert west of me, I want some now.
  5. Cant help but it certainly looks quality. Does it have a provision for a leg? do you know how much it weighs? I have more money than sense sometimes and I think I would just get it. Looks brand new
  6. We call them brush hooks. Every surveyor has one in his truck. they don't get that much use here in the desert SW.
  7. Haha. Yup punctuation isn't really my thing
  8. it was my first time doing it this way and it worked good although I had to heat it twice. Definitely a bad choice in the post, tapered and too short, a little bend at the end is a good idea Still have cat like reflexes for an old dude :-)
  9. I can fit about a 3” section in forge and it makes about 4-5’ of wire. here is a short video of how you probably should not do it….
  10. Most of these are made from a spring with 5/16” wire. this spring has 1/4” wire Quenched in oil and tempered in my toaster oven at 475 i have made a bunch of S hooks but give them away or use them. I pick them up at the scrap yard but I have a bunch and they are plentiful. have fun!
  11. Right on. At least my place has a huge selection of stuff including RR steels
  12. My scrap yard went from .30 cents to .95 cents !!!! I am glad I have a small pile because I cant afford scrap
  13. I would pass. Get a good heavy bench vise and an improvised anvil for smithing. You wont worry about breaking either and you end up with 2 tools. Plus improvised anvils are fun!
  14. Fantastic work! Thanks for sharing. I really like the decorative aspect, each piece is art to me. Love the little caliper.

    Post Vise ID

    Looks European to me. ?
  16. I too like both kinds of music. Heavy and Metal. Mostly melodic progressive metal but its all good except for the extreme hard core. Metal is very intelligent music akin to some of the classic masters. IMHO
  17. More cadastral than cosmic but I know what you mean :-)
  18. I am fascinated with metrology especially distances. We turned down a job to set monuments in the floor of a chip manufacture plant because we could not guaranty one millimeter accuracy (horz and vert) I told my boss that no one could check it either. Last I heard the facility never used those monuments as their technology was obsolete before the factory was finished.
  19. Always use .3048 exactly (or the inverse) to convert meters to international feet but be sure to check with your juristiction. Some local control networks are still in US survey feet and some even in NAVD29. !! Arizona state plain switched to international feet years ago but some indian tribes still use the survey foot. All gps data is metric of course I have seen descriptions in rods, poles, chains and varas but not one described by smokes yet.
  20. I use my 95 pound cylinder almost every time I forge. Mostly cutting and punching but it makes a good second / beginner anvil and I occasionally lay it down in that groove for drawing like John said. best part, 30 cents a pound (that was then)
  21. I made these hooks from a garage door spring, although far stronger than mild as is, I would to try heat treat them. my thoughts are veggie oil quench and temper in toaster oven. Any tips on hardening such thin stock? Thanks for looking
  22. I would build a stand out of dimensional lumber and strapping. You could engineer all kinds of shelves, racks and bits into it. Mount a vise with it??? I would not use concrete
  23. I agree. That has a forged look. Very nice anvil !
