  1. Nice quench bucket in the background!
  2. Nice anvil! There are plenty of pros that use anvils with sways.
  3. I do the handle tap thing when I'm in a hurry, and I want to keep forging without fixing the handle in the middle of a project. I kept doing that the other day until the head just flew of the handle while I was hammering! No wonder I can't get anybody to be my striker!
  4. If the handle is properly fitted, you should be able to tighten it up by making a steel wedge almost as wide as the eye and about an inch long. The thick end should be about 1/8".
  5. Cool project to make on the fly. The wings are kinda cheesy, but I guess there's nothing butter to use.
  6. Absolutely beautiful! I would love to see the look on someone's face when you said "Well, whenever I need a drawknife, I just use a chainsaw blade."
  7. I found an 18k gold ring at a lake once. I haven't cashed it in yet, but the jeweler tested it and said he'd give me 55 bucks for it as scrap. I'm holding on to it in case the value goes up. (or if I marry someone with huge fingers) OK, now that just ain't right to take a picture of a revolver and not tell us anything about it! (I'm a single action revolver guy.)
  8. He only tongs that you will end up using a lot is that pair of bolt heads. You will need different sizes. The hammer you have if an excellent choice to start on but you will want a veriety of them as well.
  9. Because the base of your Wilkinson rocks, it isn't a "perfect anvil". I would highly recommend spending that money on tooling, and using the anvil that you have. Especially because that isn't even a good deal. Look for some eBay deals for used tongs and hammers. You can get a good amount of tooling for that, and you will wish you had a good pair of tongs the minute you start trying to forge something with channelocks over one of your anvils.

    Yost vise

Interesting how the jaws resemble that of a post vise.
  11. Yep. No trickery here. Fake lines was something they added to casting molds on some lower end anvils. Arm and Hammer is a top of the line forged anvil.
  12. The hacksaw thing sounds like a good idea, but you can get great results just by starting with a half round rasp, than moving to a half round file, then switching to sandpaper. Start with 36g, and keep stepping up until you are ready for micro mesh. There's nothing like a good range of sandpaper.
  13. To me, it looks like it was painted black at some point, and most of it is just rubbed off. Definitely do a rebound test for safe measure, but I don't think it's anything to worry about. Even if it was in a shop fire, it would take a lot of heat to take away the temper.
  14. Keeping y'all in my prayers. Be strong! It is in His hands.
  15. What kind of steel do YOU use for katanas. Same steel that I use?

    Yost vise

All I know about Yost is that they can be really expensive. More than some Wiltons. Great find. How much did you pay for it?
