  1. whats the heaviest Anvil every made (in production)?
  2. Is this a real antique anvil, or a long lost cast iron boat anchor? the guy claims he found it while metal detecting. more pics with link. FOR SALE, ANTIQUE (VERY VERY OLD) ANVIL. I DUG THIS UP WHILE METAL DETECTING BACK IN 1980, 8 INCHS LONG 3 INCHS TALL IT IS PAINTED BLACK TO STOP THE RUST CASH ONLY,
  3. Just ask around! I got my brake drum for free when I asked the owner of a local shell station. Yo might have to raise your budget a little to get good results. See if there is a Blacksmith organization or guild in your area. When I go to guild meetings, I have the opportunity to use the forges and anvils etc.. from shop that the guild runs. http://www.abana-chapter.com/
  4. I wish I had that kind of cash for an anvil. Enjoy you're new companion!
  5. John, I was unsuccessfully looking for poor boy tools on Ebay. So they are out of business?
  6. I use the 3 lb Harbor frieght hammer that you replaced. Its ok, but the peen needs to be ground to the correct shape. Its cast steel and not bad for $8. I would like to upgrade with one of those Swedish style cross-pien hammers. does anybody have experience with those?
  7. Steve, he might use a cutting torch to fashion a horn or other such features. Sure it is not required, but It would make for a nicer anvil.
  8. I'm trying to find a large piece of steel for a makeshift anvil. I live in Northern Virginia and we don't have a lot of "junkyards", just metal recycling centers who don't sell their scrap. I've found a 4 inch diameter by 6 inch long steel cylinder on eBay for $30, but I would rater have a square block of steel. How and where might I get one in my area?
  9. Wow that really came out great. You could probably make these for a living!

    My coal forge

make sure those galvanized pipes don't get too hot.

    my first forge

Very nice! but I think you might want to add a bit of a hearth to hold extra coal.

    Final surface finish

    Wow! That came out Great!
  13. Does anyone know if this cheap swage tool is up to par for Blacksmithing work? The seller claims they are ductile iron. Any thoughts Link
  14. I have a 15# Anvil shaped object and it is OK. I only payed $15 for it so I wasn't expecting much. The face does mar and gouge a little when forging, but not as much as I had expected it would. The problem is it has close to NO rebound! its like hitting a piece of wood. I mainly use it for the horn. I wouldn't ever pay more than $20 for a cast iron anvil unless you were able to weld a steel face on it. Too soft and no rebound. that pretty much sums up cast iron "anvils".
  15. I soaked my pipe flange in white vinegar overnight and when I came home this afternoon the zinc was completely stripped! who knew vinegar was so effective.
  16. Great work! I hope to make some of these one day.
  17. If I owned one I'd be so hesitant to hammer on it. Such a piece of history!
  18. To macbruce: I didn't see any white smoke, but it doesn't mean it wasn't there. To Admin: Its just the pipe flange that Galvanized all the other parts are "black iron". I plan to strip or grind the zinc off of the flange before i forge again. There is something I didn't mention. I was forging a Galvanized rod that I inspected beforehand and could have sworn it was painted gray rather than galvanized. I was a rather windy night outside so I don't see how I could have been exposed to much. Who knows? I just have to be more careful in the future.
  19. I am just writing to remind anyone and everyone who does not already know, that Zinc plated or Galvanized steels should never be used in blacksmithing. The Brake rotor forge I had recently build used a galvanized pipe flange. I knew about the perils of heating zinc long before building my forge, but I convinced myself that the pipe fitting wouldn't get hot enough to vaporize (1665 F). I was obviously quite wrong. This past weekend I was out using the forge and as soon as I came back in the house my throat felt awful and raspy. The next day I had a few flu like symptoms that seemed similar to the Infamous "Metal fume Fever". Thank God, by Sunday morning I was feeling fine and my illness had past. I have a good reason to believe that my brief ailment was caused by zinc fumes and was not just coincidental. The Bottom Line is beware of Zinc coated steel when blacksmithing and never use them in forge construction unless you are 100% sure that they will not get too hot!
  20. You know your a blacksmith when you flip your burgers on a forge.
