  1. I am just writing to remind anyone and everyone who does not already know, that Zinc plated or Galvanized steels should never be used in blacksmithing. The Brake rotor forge I had recently build used a galvanized pipe flange. I knew about the perils of heating zinc long before building my forge, but I convinced myself that the pipe fitting wouldn't get hot enough to vaporize (1665 F). I was obviously quite wrong. This past weekend I was out using the forge and as soon as I came back in the house my throat felt awful and raspy. The next day I had a few flu like symptoms that seemed similar to the Infamous "Metal fume Fever". Thank God, by Sunday morning I was feeling fine and my illness had past. I have a good reason to believe that my brief ailment was caused by zinc fumes and was not just coincidental. The Bottom Line is beware of Zinc coated steel when blacksmithing and never use them in forge construction unless you are 100% sure that they will not get too hot!
  2. Hi everyone! I am currently creating a multitool similar to the Gerber Shard from an old wrench, which I suspect to be a chrome-vanadium steel. The tool features a spoon, a short prybar, bottle opener, a sharpened edge and a flathead screwdriver. Steels with chromium seem to be food-safe from what I found out online, but how about the added vanadium? The oxides at least are apparently somewhat toxic. Not knowing this, I have finished an earlier version of it a while ago from the same steel (simply the other side of the wrench), which did indeed give the food a somewhat metallic-biting aftertaste. Is this simply because I just tasted untreated metal or might this be a very light form of poisoning? Are there any common steel additives that are known to be poisonous or at least not really food-safe? Thanks in advance!
  3. So, I have some duralumin laying around and I decided to use it for the base of my forge (where the charcoal where be placed on). But I heard people say that aluminium releases toxic gases, is it safe to use duralumin, or should I change to something else? I also know that aluminium has a relatively low melting point compared to other metals, do you think that it would be able to withstand the heat?
  4. Does brass give of toxic fumes? I am wanting to make a coat rack for my neighbour so I can. Show her what I am doing.
  5. Does anyone know if copper and soldier are foodgrade safe? I saw a syrup making pan today made from copper and was soldiered very heavely. I just wondered if it is safe.
