  1. @Ropemokey : at "shop meetings" do members get to use forges and anvils? The website seemed to imply that there is opportunities for "open forge".
  2. True, Density and chemical compositon are going to be a factor. Perhaps a hard igneous rock like Granite or Basalt?
  3. Can anybody direct me to members of the Blacksmith's Guild of the Potomac on I forge Iron? I am just starting out and would like to join the guild, but have some questions. Thanks.
  4. Would a piece of rock actually give you superior rebound to a cast iron Anvil shaped object?
  5. show us a picture of your modified anvil.
  6. I'm just starting out with a harbor freight 3# cross-pien and haven't had any problems. I plan to grind it though.

cool! I made one a couple years ago, same materials.
  8. Thanks VaughnT. You are very correct about me needing to get a new grate. I just threw that grate together one afternoon with tin snips and 22 gauge sheet. I will replace it soon.
  9. I just recently built a brake rotor forge. Can I use coal in it even if I don't have a clinker breaker? would it be a problem if I don't have one? I attached a picture of my fire pot.

  11. $379.95 ends up being approximately $1.26 a pound for CAST IRON ! I have a 15 lb Anvil shaped object that I use for a horn, but gosh that's more than anyone would ever pay for gray iron!
  12. Pics attached. I just recently completed a brake rotor based forge. A hairdryer is used as a bellows. For now I am getting by with a small ASO, but I just got some 3/8 mild steel plate that I plan to use as an anvil. Does anybody have any suggestions or comments that might help me fine tune my setup?
  13. The tub is galvanized aka zinc coated. white smoke coming off of Zinc can cause "metal fume fever" if it gets hot enough. I would replace the tub with something else if I were you.
  14. burning Zinc can cause "metal fume fever"
  15. I can get black iron pipe its just harder to find in 2'' size at hardware stores.
  16. Can you use galvanized pipe fittings for a brake rotor forge? Does the forge get hot enough to give you "metal fume fever" . I'm guessing that the pipe wouldn't get hot enough, but I have heard someone say that you need to use bare iron pipe.
