  1. I suppose the threat of kathy bates coming at me is enough to scrounge up a few.. :) I should have some new pictures here fairly soon. Just been a busy time of the year, my brother still working away on the finishing parts of the forge and I hauled about 10 truckbed loads of logs and brush from my front yard after getting a large tree trimmed away from the house/powerline.
  2. .5" round 1018 is .70 cents/ft from my place, I got a 24ft piece of 1/4x3x4 tube for about $170.. Might not be the direct from the mill prices but they are very nice and very close to my house.
  3. Such a cool hammer! Thanks for sharing, looks like it found a good owner.
  4. The products and the people at Chili Forge are all top notch. I have a 2-burner model from them, gets hot!
  5. .......for real? You might as well ask, which is better, a spoon, or a screwdriver... They are 2 completely different tools, one is better for some things that the other is not, and vice versa. It all depends on what you want to do.
  6. Listen to Randy and buy that book! I purchased it and it is one of the best sources I found for info on forging presses and the hydraulics specific to them. For the cost of building a press, $30 isnt much.
  7. Monet Metals in missouri will give you a quote for things like that.
  8. Im going to just be using the bandsaw I have for this job till I can get a larger one with the proper coolant system. I wont be using the cheap blades from grizzly anymore either.
  9. not bad, did it have a brand name on it? sounds about 150-200lbs being that long.
  10. I have 3 days off each week from my regular job, the smithing gig has been going pretty good and I got it ok'd to have 4 days off starting in january. So it will be part time there and part time blacksmithing. I think the guy that runs stumptown forge used to be a lawyer, he quit to be a blacksmith.
  11. I really hope I can have the press finished this year...might be more jan-feb.. But once I get it tooled up you should come down and you could make some hardies and whatnot.
  12. 125lb peter wright to replace my 100lb vulcan. And some steel tubing soon to be cut to size for the frame of a 25ton press. The anvil came in handy before I even got it home, helped hold down the steel tubing in my short bed, I need a trailer!(or more anvils)
  13. That is an awesome first anvil, nicer than some peoples 2nd or 3rd anvils!
  14. Thanks! Yes, the quick connect is a must have. We also plan on having some remote coils that you can hold in your hand for some added reach for different projects.
  15. Good advice, thank you for your concern. I have been just showing the components without many of the details and ratings. Most of this information is available online already with other induction builds, its just no one else has had the time or know how to really put it all together and perfect it I suppose. There are a lot of little things that go into each piece that cannot be copied just from seeing them, as well as the control board, probably the most important part, cant be copied by just seeing it. We are not really planning a full on production, we are planning on making it an open source type product ranging from DIY kits with schematics and plans, to complete units.
  16. This chunk weighs about 100lbs, it was bigger than a normal rr track so the face is a decent size when its upright like that. I don't use it anymore though, probably going to stick in on craigs eventually.
  17. Nice shape for a first knife. Id like to hear about your etching a little more as well.
  18. Cant wait to see what you can do with some pattern welds. Keep it up!
  19. Thats a bummer that all that didn't fix the problems... Ive never even seen a nazel in person unfortunately so I am of no help. I couldn't imagine there could even be that many more possibilities for things that could be causing it..
  20. Hey frank, those big anvils in the back of the first picture, what the info on them?
  21. Nice anvil, should server you well as a first anvil. If the face has been milled, then you will know what to look for when shopping for your next. Nice name too, whats your last name? are we close to the same age as well?
  22. It sounds like the pump is working very well, pushing those pressures. The issue being that the machine cannot control the pressure could be in the wiring to the control valve or a physical part of the control valve itself. If you can follow the hose from the motor, it should lead to the control valve, it will have 3 other hoses coming out of it, 1 to the top of the hydraulic cylinder, 1 to the bottom and 1 going back the the fluid reservoir. The 1 going back to the fluid reservoir is the return line for normal and pressure release situations. The control valve may have some manual adjustments... maybe not. All this is just based off the way the ones I know of work, like if you were to buy the parts now and build one... I might be way off with your machine.
