Im more impressed by people that use them, anyone can stalk craglist and buy them as the come.
  3. Very nice for your third knife, the lines on the blade look very clean. The guard looks like it could fit a little better, but if your doing this well already you wont have a problem figuring out more of the little details as you go.

    Anvils

What are going to do with them?
  5. Try it and see what you can learn.
  6. I dont know why anyone bothered posting after Timothy, lol, he summed it up pretty good!
  7. They are two totally different things.. the products of each having much different physical and chemical properties. I dont feel like typing a lot... just google it and read if you want to learn about the two.
  8. $10 more and you can pick the flavor
  9. Whatever you make it out of, just make it as heavy as possible and able to secure to the ground. Wobbly is for noobs. Mine is wood, I wouldnt mind having a metal base for my next anvil.
  10. Get at least a 100lb anvil, it will last you a long time since you've just started learning. A good size life-long anvil is around 300lbs, anything over 400lbs is luxury, unless you're doing lots of work with a striker/sledge. That is all just my opinion though, read everything you can find about anvils and find what you think will work best for you.
  11. $2.41 per pound is a decent price for that anvil.
  12. Where did you get the handle from? Looks like you sanded down a store bought handle, not that thats bad, it looks awesome!
  13. Very nice work, you definitely have some talent in this hobby! keep at it
  14. Makes you wonder what awesome hammers are sitting lonely in run down buildings around the country...so sad. Awesome score though, how did you come across it? Any story of what it was used for in that building?
  15. I have a big drill press(1.5hp), I understand the pilot hole and web size of the bit concept but any pilot hole just gives me crazy vibration and had damaged a couple bits, I did tests on all sizes and I use lots of cutting oil, good pressure and proper speeds. So I don't do pilot holes anymore, I can sharpen the bits fairly easy anyway and even drilling up to 1" holes I get nice long curls coming out of the hole. Pilot holes can XXXX XX XXXXX
  16. Looks like a Trenton or Hay Budden, both are nice anvils.
  17. Does anyone have any recommendations on a video camera they have used that did well while filming hot steel? Some cameras seem to get real washed out from the intense IR and light emitted, I want to be able to show the metal squish.
  18. I need one of those to cut up my hamon and cheese sandwiches. But really, very nice blade, like all your others. In the third picture the hamon looks like clouds.
  19. Looks like this one. good luck http://www.ebay.com/itm/IRON-ANTIQUE-ANVIL-BLACKSMITH-CHRISTMAS-shiner-tx-dullo-/360602489936?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&nma=true&si=aFwMu68gRBV2m6euxgp%252FwywOZs8%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
  20. Are the Ozark pattern anvils even being made anymore though? Since Tom died and the school is no longer running. I emailed them a while back and no answer. Id want a Refflinghaus if I could buy a new anvil, maybe if I could see and test the hardness of the Fontanini before purchasing I would consider it too.
  21. pbs show with the recreated tool box and tools http://www.pbs.org/woodwrightsshop/video/2800/2812.html
  22. Google "blacksmith shop" and look at the images, lots of the old shops look like they would burn down in seconds. The cordwood method looks less flammable, fire hazards are inherent with this hobby, just practice common sense and have the proper safety equipment.
  23. Here is one of the prettiest steam hammers Ive ever seen. http://collectionsonline.nmsi.ac.uk/detail.php?t=objects&type=related&kv=46229
