  1. well, let us go out and dig up some traction engines!!! out there, the castings would be fine, and most old engines need a boiler rebuild anyway, so lets get going..... i will bring a shovel.... to bring this comment back onto thread..... we can look for anvils too... ;)
  2. babindas blacksmith workshop got scrapped, i had a big cry about that, (the anvils were stolen beforehand, i saw where they used to be) and mulgrave decided that after the last smith died, they would no longer need smiths. what used to be the smithy is now a smoko room. too many sad stories out there, i heard a lot of sad stories whilst looking for a boiler to run my hammer too. tractions and stationaries cut up and scrapped. same old tales of woe. i have no shop here, hans is looking after a lot of my stuff, in return for gleaning valuable knowledge from me
  3. yeah mate, i'm in g'vale, i get up to visit HJP when i can, but i can't get the time lately what with working ( ) the cane season. im working on getting this baby going eventually https://www.flickr.com/photos/41924895@N07/sets/72157628439741909/with/6519812231/
  4. hey mate, i'm in gordonvale, i prefer charcoal, rather than coal or coke. i don't work as a blacksmith full time, (i'm a cane train driver), but i did my industrial blacksmith trade in brissie, i'd be happy to come and give you some tips some time, woody.
  5. more than just an upsetting block "ausfire", that has a good face, step, and hardy and pritchel holes, use it as an anvil! never have too many anvils, or hardened work surfaces. when you say "home" and "in a junk pile" i assume you are talking about "museum grounds?" ;)
  6. lucky it is in nsw, up this side of the line, we would be nabbed for "associating...."
  7. hi, I have recently met a bloke on another forum, who is building a Clayton "undertype" steam wagon and is looking for someone to help him out with making/ heat treating some springs for it. he is in Cheshire, and if anyone would like to have something to do with his project, please pm me. thanks Woody
  8. mine is to actually do some smithing. it has been a while........
  9. it would be interesting to know the fuel usage vs pollution from the two as well. I would bet on the steamer being more efficient AND more environmentally friendly
  10. old thread, still love it, and worth the read ;) what is the weight of the parts of a 2CWT? I might be making an offer on one next month, and I would like to have the appropriate info up my sleeve!
  11. hans, the hole is in the wrong spot! it should be closer to Gordonvale :p
  12. chaplin could have done it :) I had a great laugh watching this!
  13. he should be fine after the transplant. should be in the coming months.
  14. my good friend Hans, known on this site as HJP, has within the last year succumbed to a rare progressive illness, and if not treated could lead to serious issues in later life. please send prayers for a recovery, he has given up on himself, and if he sees that others have faith, then he may see that there is a light at the end of this dark road.
  15. it sure works both ways..... I have seen smiths at demo/ re enactments, telling rollicking untruths, with all sincerity, un aware that actual trained blacksmiths were in attendance. tour guides seem to take pleasure in misinforming tourists, a local train line was described as being built 100 years before European settlement! and I have seen a steam locomotive engineer telling a film crew about the heat of the firebox on his locomotive- "it gets up to 2000 degrees celcius in there....." the blind lead the blind.
  16. I thought it was a great movie, as a 3rd crusade re enactor/ enthusiast/smith for many years, there were a few cringe worthy points, but overall I was glad for the lack of over the top Hollywood action. the crusades were essentially a long series of conflicts based on propaganda and religious extremism from both sides, and it was good to see this portrayed realistically.
  17. Australia is following its older brother America down the path of suing and liability. sad when you think that it used to be the opposite.
  18. what he is tryin ta say is that the old leg vice transmits the energy into the ground, and is usually made of more ductile material, so is far less likely to get you to that "aw XXXX ive hit it one too many times" moment of regret. leg vices were made for smithing, fitters vices were made for fitting...... just sayin mate ;) id hate to see someone bash an heirloom one too many times
  19. here in aussie land it is so hot-we regularly rest our cold beer on the anvil, and rub ice cubes on it, to cool it down! if your anvil is cold enough to sit on before lunch, you haven't been working hard enough ;)
  20. well the decoration sure looks like a singer part ;)
  21. hans, you've got a Brisbane blacksmith up here already, and you are sick of him! what makes you think the others are much good :p i'll be there at that there hammer-in, in 2020
  22. I would like to point out, that although not offended nor put off the course of smithing, (as I am indeed the one who posted this statement), I did feel that there was no more to be said in that thread, as anything remotely knife related is beyond my technical scope (at this present moment) and I might be "redirected" again. Having done an apprenticeship in industrial blacksmithing (during which I trained 3 apprentices under me), having worked with metals professionally for 15years, and being the father of twin 5 year old girls, I know there are limits to the amount of times you can answer the same question...... But- I do feel the thread was stopped abruptly, and I feel like I need to apologise to john n for that, since it was I that effectively brought it to a halt. I merely stated, instead of the one word praise, that I felt that I should say that john was doing something beyond my comprehension (at this time), and to keep it up! I don't feel it was a "what does a hammer look like" question. it was not even a question! :P I also agree that you lads have done so much for the community of smiths on here, and you have earned the right to be curmudgeons, and have fielded your fair share of stooooopid questions. keep up the good work fellers
  23. congratulations Hans! yours is the 500th reply! (discounting deleted, lost and double posts) you win the chance to give away your MASSEY 3cwt hammer!!!! *conditions apply*
