  1. I found a gnome in my shop, riding my massey. Closer look revealed he is 6'7"!
  2. Hey beaver, i tracked down that info by emailing masseyforging. They will give you the age.
  3. Looking into it's history, I was given this info: C1946. :- This is a 5 Cwt Clear Space Hammer made in 1962 and supplied to Adelaide Steamship Co. it would have been used in their workshops building steamship parts, and later sold to a secondhand machinery broker who sold it to the mill i got it from. So after coming halfway around the world, it crossed the country from south to north, and ended up in cairns! When i sent this photo to my wife, she said it looked like a steamship, days before I found out its history! The Adelaide Steamship C°y offices in cairns
  4. Will, the proportions and lines for one. The makers and designers of armour were skilled artists combining form and function. The shapes of certain parts, and the lack of proportion in vital areas shows that the makers of these (and i do not believe they are from the same maker) were not masters of armour smithing, but reproducers, skilled in their own right, just not at renaissance armour. Those close helmets and gorgets are neither practical nor historically accurate in their shape. Highly decorated amour of this period was tailored to fit the wearer, and was made to incorporate as much movement as physically possible, not merely "get whacked on the thigh and be able to clunk away"
  5. They have a look of 19th century copy to me. The Victorians put a lot of time and effort into making copies and fakes to adorn stately homes and i believe it was done in america also. They are not in any way original pieces, im sorry to say. They are nicely made but not functional nor are the proportions right at all.
  6. http://www.masseyforging.com/home.htm I've never seen such a massey before! Early number too! Look forward to more updates!
  7. Definitely a combination of both. Specializing in art OR industry alone in this climate and location is a recipe for disaster. I love heavy industrial art anyway It isnt set up yet, but this hammer differs only from the one I served my industrial apprenticeship under by being about 30 years newer. Your hammer looks to be a fine machine also!
  8. Who needs more than one speed? I never have. Every mechanical hammer i have come across needs adjusting for different sized materials, and cannot do fast light blows or slow heavy blows without swift manoeuvres with your driving foot. One speed with infinately variable blows will do me just fine, thankyou! The universe may be small, but at least it has masseys to brighten it up.
  9. It is a 5cwt, so 5x112lb A MASSEY clearspace hammer is a pneumatic self contained hammer without any slides to guide the ram, giving a "clear space" all around the ram. Many smiths, myself included, believe that they are the most versatile hammer in the known universe! Also very quiet.
  10. Sounds legit. Might be tempted to give it a go some time. Got to set the beast up first
  11. I've worked under hammers where the pitting under tooling was rather excessive, but have always just cleaned under the swedges after the job goes back in the furnace, or before the next one goes into the swedges. I can understand that on some hammers it might be no louder than the rest of the operation, but under a massey clearspace, saddle tools are way louder than the general forging operations.
  12. LOUD? i can see the merits of it, i can almost hear the merits of it too!
  13. Luck, almost 10 years of patience and the help of some solid decent blokes.
  14. Update on this tale. I am now the proud owner of this hammer.
  15. Hi again everysmith! I just re stumbled across this thread.... How youse all going!?
  16. my poor thing is still in bits in several yards....
  17. spit works better than water, especially if it still has bubbles in it.... lol
  18. when i have guests i deliberately spit on the anvil while fire welding. CRACK!!! that wakes them up :D
  19. old picket-in-stone fences i have restored had lead "caulked" into the holes in the stone, to set the iron in place. -not a suggestion- just a historical technique
  20. let me know the date, mate, and i will see what i can do!
  21. when they say cfm, it all depends what pressure they are referring to... there is a lot of difference between 260 cfm @ 100psi and @ 10psi...... i may have a blower you could use, i will look and let you know mate. did you see the blower that rid was using? a car fan.
