  1. i like the piñata idea! but maybe licorice instead of coal??
  2. please specify what you would like to learn, and we can all get in line to help! this site can become rather addictive, whether in the searching of old forums, or keeping up with the new content, or even spending hours on chat, and there are experts just waiting to give the perfectly honed tidbit of advice (or open a can of worms :D) it also helps to add your location (generally geographically) in your profile, as there are members as far apart as cairns to cornwall, canada to china!
  3. i love this thread  you mob are SO my type !
  4. anyone in ole blighty want a steam 5CWT? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Steam-Engine-/111093674924?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item19ddb2f3ac listed under "toys and games" !!!
  5. sevuj (savage) is from orcland. he seems like a nice fella
  6. ah good point. they may have built ships somewhere around there. it has a very sturdy slotted base for setting up tooling and so forth.
  7. better picture (cropped) '' target='_blank'>> i agree, more of a press. but air driven press? sounds like a lot of work for not much oomph!
  8. lovely anvil, doesnt matter who made it! you can see it is made of about 8 pieces, 4 feet, body, horn, tail, and face all welded together under a steam hammer the square holes ( you will find one underneath) are indeed "handling holes) where bars were driven in to hold the anvil during the forging processes. i would suggest it is english, just to narrow it down..... i am quite willing to be proven wrong.
  9. i'll second that one phil, i was going to say something along those lines, but less succinct....
  10. Hello experts, have you ever seen anything like this? labelled "large air hammer" in the link. has a large cylinder on top- possibly originally steam- '' target='_blank'>> i went for a look. it is indeed large, and could possibly be converted to hydraulic with little effort. thankyou for you expert opinion! i have 3 days to make a decision (today is monday 3rd june 2013)
  11. i found this item near me, possibly built to run on steam, maybe air (it runs on air at the moment) but i have never seen anything like it...... forging press? i have 3 days to make up my mind... '' target='_blank'>> titled "large air hammer"
  12. hey ryan, i am at little mulgrave, and hjp is on the tablelands, ifn you are interested in a beer and a smite.......
  13. dan, we miss looking at your ugly mug with that pint of beer! get well soon!
  14. bumping the thread. 'cause i can B) bump is an understatement, we are talking about steam hammers, so: BUMP!
  15. the name "art" has been used to excuse some pretty horrible things over the years.........
  16. hey you all forgot to mention "the tradesman". craft, and art are all well and good, but the trade is where it fits together. sometimes as a tradesman, one has to put aside the art and craft side, and make it "right" :) production of parts for machinery, where they have to fit to a mm tolerance, there is no room for art, or individuality. it has to be "just so" maybe the tradesman has to be able to draw the line, and have the ability to swap between them all.
  17. i have always wanted one, and i have used them in two separate trade applications, blacksmithing and silver smithing. perfect for production runs, and lets face it, we all can do with some help when it comes to production runs.... fix it and use it, or let someone who will fix it have it. DO NOT SCRAP!
  18. somewhere online i have seen an image of a hammer around that size in a park/museum in germany.... with someone sitting on the anvil. i cant for the life of me find it though!
  19. i have twin 5 year old girls. wonderful little creatures, i have already given them their own hammers.
  20. hey mate, look forward to chatting again. all i can add is, dont let the sca (or any other group) tie you down. make the best armour you can possibly make, and make sure you still always think you can do better. i will die, still wishing i was as good as lorenz helmschmeid, or the tomaso family... hell, i would settle for phillipo negroli ;)
  21. ;) most of my phone calls sound like that anyway.... i used to call my mate, while i was forging, wait till he answered, and then WHAM! and hang up. :) i may have done the same to HJP.
  22. twins are a complete wonderful gift on their own (i would know!) but that is a beautiful complementary gift ;) , my first question was- boy and girl?
  23. what about hands free phil? get with the times! or does it get disrupted by your hat?
