  1. speaking to the old smith is first on the list, got his number now and i'll see how it goes..... apparently he's a talker, and ill need to devote a few hours to a 'chat' (seems like a very smithly trait ) the logistics of the transport are not an issue, just the proceedure involved. ie: does it get lifted off the anvil block or can the block/anvil be removed first. from what i've seen of owen bush bashers flickr photos (his #2-3 seems to fit this ones discription) i think the rest is *fairly* straight forward (?) the age/ original price is beyond me, judging by the telephone number i'd say it was at least 80 year old.... http://www.flickr.com/photos/41924895@N07/6234409632/in/photostream
  2. have any of you blokes ever put in a tender for blacksmithing gear? ive gotta get a hold of some gear, ive got me eye on it, and ive just been told its gettin put to tender. now ive done me time as a blacksmith, and i know how to bash steel and get stuck into a 120mm round billet with a massey 5, but this idea of puttin a number down and waitin is just beyond me... any ideas on the make of hammer? http://www.flickr.com/photos/41924895@N07/6229907263/in/photostream anyone who knows what this beastie be, let me know! i need to decommission it, and im not the bluntest tool in the shed when it comes to pulling things apart to move em, but any advice is always the icing on the proverbial. you wait till you see what i can come up with from under the jaws of this beast! HELP! now i understand that it could be all down to where it is, but i think i can knock off part of the price being in a remote effn q (far north qld, aussie) possie. but there has been some interest, hence being put to tender, so how do you work out a price? scrap + some? what im willing to pay? HELP!! WOODY.
  3. well lets just say its too far for you to get......im in cairns, far north qld, australia..... ;)
  4. ok, after some well placed googling, which led me back to this wonderful forum again, i believe it to be a 3cwt pilkington/alldays and onions hammer. a piece of advice from the knowledgeable please..... would i be better going for a 5cwt massey, or this hammer, considering future repairs may be nessesary.... i dont have the money for both, even if they were both at scrap prices... which is possible. and could the 3cwt be run on single phase power?
  5. it is possible i may be able to purchase a self contained PNEUMATIC hammer, the like of which i havent seen in all my short -massey dominated- years. it would appear to be around the 3cwt range (judging by the tup size) and the (oval) manufacturers plate has been removed by some recent 'souvenierer' the only plate left states "WHEN ORDERING SPARE PARTS AND RENEWALS QUOTE NO- 3193 TELEGRAMS, HAMMERS BAMBER BRIDGE TELEPHONE, 21 BAMBER BRIDGE " it has no casting of any manufacturers name in it.... I HAVE ONLY SEEN IT AT NIGHT, BUT IT WAS WORKING LAST YEAR AS FAR AS I KNOW. i will endeavour to get some photos up, but if anyone knows this plate, and who would have manufactured/supplied in the bamber bridge area. it is a long way from its original home! it also has a very strange -muffler???- suspended vertically above it from between the cyclinders. i originally thought it must be a steam hammer...but it has a (caged) belt drive, and two cylinders. any info is great! and of course in due time pictures will be forthcoming, but i intend to offer scrap prices for it tomorrow:) woody.
  6. i am trying to find some work to base my location around....that old chestnut.. so anywhere in the greater melbourne area, within an hours drive to the cbd but hopefully closer, is right on the money. me wife doesnt want to be too far out.... i have searched 'blacksmith melbourne' but have not had much luck...... i found 'warp ironworks' in bayswater, but ill look for the berrick one too. thanks for your reply, when i move down ill get in contact, maybe some beers will be had....are you within a daytrip of the 'bourne? woody.
  7. hello fellow blacksmiths/tradesmen/alchemists..... i was wondering if anyone on iforgeiron works as a smith in the greater melbourne region, or could recommend one, as i will be moving there from cairns in the next few months. i am a 28 yr old currently working for an ornamental ironwork business in cairns, and i completed my apprenticeship a year ago in brisbane with Forge bros in carole park. i have been trained to use massey 1 and 5 cwt self contained hammers and also other forging machines: 120 ton Massey forging press 202A John Hiene press 200 ton Foster forging/drawing press 300 ton Eumuco upsetter Sullivan drill rod upsetter i am also a competent mig and stick welder. i am seeking gainful employment to further my blacksmithing skills and career. i have also delved into historical reproduction and armour fabrication. if anyone could help me out i would be extremely grateful. thanyou in advance, John 'Woody' Charlton
  8. when you consider that it isnt being used for full blows, the 20lb should be fine..... youd put that much poundage into a 10b with a full blow...... methinks....
  9. hope he doesnt ever get bored with it....start em young i say.....from cairns, queensland, australia.
  10. thanks phil, i havent got the hammer yet, im trying to sort out the logistics in my head before i go to see the big boss.... i have, or can gain access to, a forklift, backhoe, jacks, trucks and helpers. it only needs to be moved 10 kms or so, and it is going from a high roofed shed to a shed with an overhead crane (for temporary storage..). id love to see that article, but dont kill yourself trying to find it. thanks woody.
  11. OI! blokes this isnt a lingual discussion on the good old days of the english language! i am looking for genuine advice, not an old fogies look at chaucers great works..... :P
  12. we did a lot of induction heating at my last place of employ, but the coil was at groin level.......:o
  13. coo-EE! you reckon you could splash some of that good oil over my way now? just a few wise words on the dismantling and transport of this bugger. i dont want to go into this negotiation half cocked, as it were. i want to show this bloke that im the man to take it off his hands. i dont want him to think im coming the raw prawn eh? thanks mate.
  14. gday mate. needs are as needs need be. i started out with a piece of railway iron, some hardwood stumps and a hollow log propped up, with a natural draught..... improvisation is the key to this old and noble trade. find the largest lump of steel you can to forge upon, get some second hand hammers, vise grips, scrap steel, and start thumping. use a plow disk, weld a few legs on and a t peice underneath, run a vacuum cleaner backwards and chuck some charcoal on. youd be surprised how hot you can get this setup running. tinker and tap....thump and most of all... enjoy! the good gear will find you in the most unlikely of places. and i hope it likes you! woody. ps if you dont want to go so primitive, put some money into it....... hooroo cobber.
  15. Forge brothers, i couldnt get into the qr workshops, served my time and got out. family and personal issues meant i couldnt stay on. i was quite dissapointed that all my smithing training was in house, meaning i didnt get to do practical at qr workshops, or theory at tafe, as promised when i joined. where in nsw are you based? being in a "remote area" ill see if i cant get it for <$2500 still installed eh? thanks for your input, woody.
  16. hi the number stamped upon the top ring is 0. the slide when the lever is depressed comes level, and everything else is as per normal. put some rubber on the blocks and put her in position, no change. got caught pulling the bell cover off so i dont think ill go near it for a bit... xxxx. may have spoiled my chances...... John N- what would you determine the weight of a 5cwt to be for transport puposes? ill make a bid on it i reckon.....see if they'll take scrap prices.
  17. this part of your post eluded me at first glance. yes it is possible if the old boily has been using it as a press, he might have left it for considerable lengths of time......
  18. what is the "stuffing box" you speak of? ill try taking the bell cover off but, as i said, it has to be an under cover op.....im not supposed to be there....when you say fully pressed down do you mean FULLY PRESSED DOWN or just in the lowest notch? i realise this sounds like a stupid question but i want to do it right, in the most efficient way, to avoid detection.....would it work with a heavy weight on the treadle when engaged? its not blowing, and the 5cwt clearspace i was trained on seemed a lot worse, inside and out. it used to wheeze like an old asthmatic on startup and in nuetral, and used to "knock" when raised quickly on single blow. other than that it worked a breeze, i must have done more than 3500 hrs on it., with no issues at all. this one seems perfect.....even the blocks (original) show barely any signs of wear, no undue noises or taps or knocks,....except for this little issue. upon opening the side plates and looking in i could see the valves seem clean and tidy (to a novice...) im thinking of making an offer on it in its current state.... what is a good starting offer on a fully functional 5wct massey clearspace? and a disfunctional one? thankyou.
  19. no, nothing holding it down. even when i use the lever, driver style without engaging the treadle she'll chomp.
  20. hellow fellow enthusiasts! my name is woody and I've recently (6 months now) come out of my time as an industrial smith in ipswich, queensland, australia. i served my time (4 years) under two massey hammers, a 1cwt and a 5cwt, learned a lot about servicing them, but didnt learn the lot... this is where my frustration begins. Upon arrival at my new place of employ, a sugar mill in far north queensland, i discovered a 5cwt massey in seemingly immaculate condition. i started the machine. it ran beautifully, but trying to put her into low pressure hold up she starts biting and slapping, or multiple blow with foot treadle engaged, she goes to multiple blow alright, but at full blow range! i have, in my eyes, inherited this machine....the original smith has long gone, the company has no idea of its capabilities and the staff have no idea and are somewhat scared of it...except one old boilermaker who has been using it to press right angles.(he incidentally uses it in single blow and leaves it thus upon switching it off! yargh! i am employed in a general cleaning capacity and shouldnt be near the thing, but i cant stay away and think it is a real shame to have her treated so. now, the 1cwt at my old work had an issue where it would start slapping when it had too much oil pumped into the cylinders. but it was an older style, not a clearspace, and had a different valve configuration (i think) could this be the problem, learned smiths? the oil flow WAS quite fast. or could it be something more sinister? has the old boily damaged the valves? any input beyond a vague "yurrrgh" would be of help. thanks, woodrow.
