  1. the chrome plating is only a few microns thick as is the nickel under it. many people are under the false impression that chrome (or any other plating- silver, copper etc) will fill in any scratches and smoothe a rough surface, but years working as a platers assistant/polisher/antique silverware restorer, gives me a pretty solid opinion on the matter, and it is a resounding NO!. chrome over a rough surface is a shiny rough surface, and looks as it sounds- ROUGH. even fingerprints on a polished steel surface can cause oxidation which can then be seen in the finished peice. dont ask me how i know this..... the type of steel is not a problem, they even give plastic objects a metallic coating, and then chrome it. be sure to handle the finished chrome plated object with cotton gloves, getting greasy fingerprints off chrome can cause more scratches than it is worth.
  2. any surface blemish will be amplified by the reflections created by the chrome. chromed parts need to be mirror polished before plating, if you want a mirror finish.
  3. maybe he went here.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidney_Poitier
  4. $275 american, for a 448lb anvil. you have seriously upset me and i think you should leave. right now. leave your anvil in the corner when you go B) seriously -beautiful anvil there mate, and you have a great place of employ too! i'll have to get a tour when i come to london one day!
  5. i used my helmet to look at the sun last week, we had an anular eclipse, very beautiful. my father in law uses a flap of leather on the back of his helmet, as he is a bald man, and doesnt have the insulation i do :P it also works to keep out any unwanted light from sun/ flouro lights etc... he made it from an old motorcycle jacket i think. wool is flame resistant, so a bit of old 100% wool blanket, or 100% wool felt would work. it is used in flame resistant stunt and firefighting suits.
  6. no wuckers mate, those things pop up every few days round here. dime a dozen.
  7. how about the salvage effort.. ? :( that hammers friends went into that box of shavings.....
  8. hey phil, isnt that the hammer you were going to send up here?
  9. it is possible that an attempt to move it was made, and it was put behind a train, on a flatbed, and its diameter was to great to fit through the tunnel. that would fit both stories.
  10. what is the diameter of the bore? mine must be low pressure, it is 9 inch diameter!
  11. i was wondering where i left my cornish boiler! thanks, ill come and get it.
  12. i like using electrolysis, but for my boiler i am about to restore, i cannot risk embrittlement, so i will use molasses
  13. having said that though frosty, there are some things that erode the steel, and not just the rust, caustic soda, in the same ratio, erodes into the parent metal, and so does salt water.
  14. then call it a bastard! less confusion the english language is open to evolution, look at american english! talk about modification! if you want to be pedantic, expect to pedal backwards at some point. is it a "blacksmith leg vise" or just a "leg vise" if the former, then is not everything in a smithy refered to as a "blacksmith......." is it a leg for running or walking? it it a table leg? or is it to be mounted on a free standing "post" or "stump"? is it in fact to be mounted on a water "leg" of a firetube boiler???
  15. fix your anvil and vice down, turn your anvil around, so you can get closer without nadding yourself on the side horn. the horn doesnt "have" to be on the left, especially if it gets in the way of using the anvil correctly. when you get close to a fine point on the taper, work close to the edge, so you dont hit the anvil. (opinion) you dont have to "sound" other than that, good work, keep it up
  16. i suggest hours of reaading through these forums, as opposed to getting everyone to repeat what they have previously stated in countless threads. good on you for having a go at forging, the esscence of smithing is the ability to recycle, modify and adapt
  17. this smacks of bikie talk..... have they even infiltrated here???!
  18. very nicely done sir, but we have come to expect great things from you, and you never disappoint.
