  1. Good Mourning, Is this a Lesson? Is this Confusion or Confision? The pressure of Hydraulics makes Steel talk, in creaks and groans and sometimes explosions! Why are you making a light weight Hydraulic Bomb? Neil
  2. Good Morning Helix, Come on over, lets sit down and discuss your pre-dic-ament. Neil
  3. Good Morning, Francisco Welcome from Vancouver Island, 2 hours from Vancouver, by Ferry (no tunnel or bridge). That is an interesting "Miss Piggy". It looks like it gives you all kind of shapes, upside down there is a selection of very possible shapes! I don't think it is important to know when she was born and when you can have a Birthday Party. She is in your hands now, you can choose any name you respect and you can have a Party anytime you want. Treat her with respect and she will return the favor. Neil
  4. Good Morning, When you fire up the Forge, you will have higher Propane pressure. As the refractory heats up, you can turn the Propane pressure down. What the number is, is irrelevant, no 2 gauges read the same. Take a couple Fire Bricks and make an adjustable door with an opening at the bottom. two half bricks, one on each outside edge with a full brick across the top. You have to have an opening, for the chimney effect. Make it adjustable. You should connect to the Saskatchewan Branch of the Western Canadian Blacksmith Guild. I have their contact if you would like. There are quite a few around/in Saskatoon but the membership is spread out quite a bit. Like the wind, here, there, everywhere. Neil
  5. Good Morning, I remember driving one of those Dodge's. Fill it full of people, hide a box or 2 of Beer in the trunk and head for the Drive-In Theater. The entry was by the 'Car Load'. Now, you can't find a 'Drive-In' that is working. Lots of old ones, though. There used to be one beside the highway, just north of Williams Lake. Neil
  6. Good Morning Will, Find a piece if square stock that you can make fit your Hardy, make it so it will sit higher than your Anvil Face. Weld the stem to the backside of your Leaf Spring stock. This will give the Leaf Spring, full support against the Anvil Face. Pre-Heat your pieces before welding and Post Heat after welding, let cool in still air. A Hot Cut is for cutting 'Hot Material' not cold material like you tried earlier. Neil
  7. Good Morning, I have something similar in my collection. I have never paid any attention to it. The Blower is the same as what is under the belly of a Wood Lever Forge. Except it uses a ratchet to drive the belt. Forget about who made it, What is the problem? Is it not working? The picture has triple gear reduction and was made early(?) in the last Century. If you need a name, create a name! Neil
  8. Good Morning, For us, the ferry is part of 'Life'. If we want to go somewhere and do something different, we have to leave the 'Rock'. It is just different for you because you are used to jumping in your vehicle and going somewhere, anytime!! We can't do anytime!! Think of the Ferry as a 'Cruise', it is never the same, something different to look at every time. I am involved with the Vancouver Island Blacksmiths Association for over 30 years. Once a year we teach a Blacksmith Course, 8 Saturdays, 8:30am to 5:00pm. We have had a number of people from your side, take the course. CanIRON started with our group in 1995. This year it is in Fergus, Ontario, August 3-6. I will fly out for this one. I have been involved with the organization of 3 different CanIRON events. It is on it's 3rd journey across Canada. Probably back in BC in either 4 or 6 years. The last CanIRON we did in BC (2017) was at Kwantlen in Cloverdale. If you are ever stuck for an answer, Gerard is the Head Farrier Instructor and he is extremely open. For quite a while, he was opening up their Shop, to anyone interested in Blacksmithing. One night a week. Dan is the Blacksmith at Fort Langley, he lives in Langley, close to the border. He also has a Blacksmith Shop at his home. Dan was a member of our organization for quite a while. He and his 2 sons would come over. My knowledge of greater Vancouver will not be as good as yours. I think Queen Elizabeth Park is near downtown. I had an Aunt and Uncle that lived near there. Are you starting your journey, in the Blacksmith World? Which Forge did you buy? (it doesn't really matter, they are all similar). Most everything you will need or want, you can make. Vancouver Island Blacksmiths Association has their own Blacksmith Shop at Luxton Fairgrounds, 15km from downtown Victoria. If you ever want to try something or try out something, just ask. Our Blacksmith Shop is open for members on Monday and Wednesday evenings. We also have a mobile Blacksmith Shop that we do Demonstrations at different Fairs/Events to generate the funds to keep our Shop open. Our monthly meetings are on the last Sunday of the month, at Luxton Fairgerounds. I just got back, yesterday, from the North West Blacksmith Association, Spring Conference. It was in Longview Washington. NWBA members cover BC, Alberta, Washington, some of Idaho, Oregon and Northern California. Their web-site is www.blacksmith.org There are members that live close to the border, as well. They have a monthly get together at their home Blacksmith Shop at the fairgrounds in Longview, near the end of each month. Ciao fur now, Neil Gustafson
  9. Heat the nut, let it cool a couple times. The heat will break the rust bond, it you loosen the nut when it is red hot, it MAY take the threads with it. Work slow, heat expands the nut, move it a bit when it is hot, let it cool. Using any kind of Penetrating Oil will burn off when heated. Be Patient, my little one. Work slow, is the fastest. NEVER USE AN EZE-OUT!! It will expand and make it tighter!! The picture above is a 'Flare Wrench' it is used for brake lines or similar. High quality manufacture is OK, less expensive will buy you failure!!
  10. Good Morning Roy, Gloves should be loose, so you can throw them off in a hurry. I never wear gloves unless I am doing work on the Power Hammer. When you can feel heat in the glove, it is almost too late, the glove will burn you as well. Leather takes a bit to cool down too. Neil
  11. Good Morning, Shadow, I have lots of contacts for people near you. Send me a pm. What area of Vancouver are you near. I will be at Mission Raceway, next weekend. I will probably bring a Forging set-up for the evening play. Thanks, Neil
  12. Rooster Arm or Hot Rooster. My lazy eye see's, Arm Buster. I know, you are born with it, don't take me a being critical. LOL Da Roost Studio. Twisted Rooster. A short name that will quickly roll off the tongue. Whatever you use, people will relate the name to you. Neil
  13. Good Morning, If you put a lump of Silicone (Bath Tub Silicone), under the Anvil, you won't need the Angle bar. If you grind the base so there are 3 slightly higher lumps/feet, it won't wobble on any surface. If you make a steel base, use 3 legs (same reason). This is not sending Rockets to the Moon, it is making a point to hammer on, comfortably. With a wood base, if you have a friend over, that is taller. Make plywood shims for the bottom of the base. A Sky-Hook will get in the way LOL. Welcome from the West Coast!! Neil
  14. Good Morning from the west coast of North America. The beginning is always the best place to start. LOL There are many different Blacksmith groups around the world, find the group near you and connect with them. It is always reassuring when you have a Mentor watching your progress and offering little bits of helpful guidance. I give all my students a small container of 'Play-Doh' (plasticene, modeling clay, river bank clay, cookie dough, whatever is handy). This moves like hot metal, except you can hold it in your hands and use your fingers. Enjoy the Journey, there is a beginning, but there is no end...... Neil
  15. Good Morning Bo, The simple answer is to connect a 120v blower motor, using a Gate Valve or a reostat to adjust the air quantity. To try to rebuild the original blower, would be cost effective to purchase your own 'Machine Tools' (Lathe and Drill/Mill). I have a couple of exactly what you have, No, I haven't rebuilt them yet. It is way easier to use a Propane Forge, you are up and running in a half hour. K.I.S.S. Neil
  16. Good Morning, That looks like a real nice looking "Vulcan" Neil
  17. Good Morning, Need = life necessity. Want = Picture on a Poster. Desire = Dreaming. Could Use = More Practical. What was used = What was available within a reasonable distance. The Machine doesn't create accuracy, the operator does! If there is no Box to restrict your thinking, How is it possible for there to be a Box to contain your thinking? Neil
  18. Good Mourning SC, Welcome to our Wurld, to wherever you are that a Shadow follows you. If you put your location (area) in your Avatar, we could then guide you to someone close to you. I know Santa Claus works at the Knorth Pole, I don't know the lady that runs the Shouth Pole. I have heard she is quite frigid. LOL Wootz is quite a big thing to start out with. Most people start out with a little thing called a Sword, they learn the hard way, that it take a few years to come out empty handed. Most drop the ball and are never heard from again. Connect to a group near you and take little steps with positive outcomes. Then after a few years of learning the basics, you can Wootz to the new Music. Enjoy the journey, the destination keeps moving. Neil
  19. Good Morning SinDoc, I bought a couple Grizzly 2x72 about 10 years ago. They have taken a pile of abuse from unknowledgeable members. Yes, we have had to replace a switch and we put new bearings in the motor. Still tickin..... Neil, Vancouver Island Blacksmiths Association
  20. Good Morning, The best Automotive Stethoscope, is a piece of hose. If it hits a fan blade, no problem. Neil
  21. Good Morning from the west of Canada, I have a Reiter, made before the name changed to Kuhn 24. The documentation I have, I ordered from Centaur Forge in the USA. Bill Peih owned Centaur Forge, he has since passed away. His daughter is Peih Tools, I think both are still in business. I have not had a problem finding parts, from the Machinery world. Industrial parts suppliers. Some, you may have to make, but the sealing rings should go by dimension. Remember, the USA is not Metric. Do your conversion with a calculator. Good Luck, Neil
  22. Good Morning, Why won't they work, a campfire works. It is all about controlling the base of a fire, regardless what the fuel is. I have a wood fired Forge that works well, the wood burns and makes Charcoal, MAGIC!! Neil
  23. Good Morning, Carolus It looks similar in size and construction to a Nazel 2B that I had. Welcome from the left coast of North America. Neil
  24. Good Morning, It just fills the space at the bottom of the post. Neil
  25. Good Morning, Frosty; I can appreciate the humour in that jesture. I think a person would need a change of Pants!! I was road testing a customers car, one day. The customer decided he wanted to come along. He wouldn't quit talking, as I was trying to listen to the car, I was also trying to center the Steering Wheel. After a bit, I figured he needed to be in control, so I passed him the Steering Wheel and said "here, You drive" while going about 30MPH. Funny how the return trip was quiet!! LOL Neil
