June 27, 201412 yr Well it's been a looonnnggg wait but it finally followed me home. A really nice 250lb Fontanini. A touch disappointed in a good way. Flattened letter punch and two chisels trying to put my name on the bottom :) guess I'll have to bring my little etching tool home from work. Hammer jumps up into my hand quite nicely from it. Knocked my forge over so it's going to be a day or two till I fire it up and play a little. Just gotta love knocking the insulation loose.
June 30, 201412 yr Almost didn't go to the fleamarket today as I was getting a late start and the temps were supposed to be over 100 today; but since I needed to be on that side of town anyway I did a quick perusal and picked up a pretty mint set of ATHA pick up tongs with shortened handles---just the way I like them!---for US$5

July 1, 201412 yr This has been waiting for me for about a year. I didn't have the money until a few days ago so I had to wait and fortunately the seller held it for me. I need a base or stump for it and will also have to sell my other anvil to rationalize keeping it. I'm not sure who made it yet and have not had time to hit it with a wire wheel to see if I can see any makers marks on it. It also came with a forge with a champion blower, some tongs and another bickern type anvil.
July 1, 201412 yr Can't seem to figure out how to edit my post! In any case, I hit the anvil with a wire wheel and found the letters PET on one line and WR on a second line so it must be a Peter Wright. It is also marked with the numerals 2 2 27 and if I am understanding what I have found on the interweb, it means the anvil weighs about 307 pounds. I've included pictures of the bickern type anvil as well as the forge. I have a gas forge now and really no room for this coal burner (at least anywhere I could use it) but wish sometimes that I had the ability to make a more local heat than I am able to do with the gas forge.
July 2, 201412 yr Author Gazz, use a 2 liter bottle with a hole in the cap to cool the stock and localize the heat.
July 2, 201412 yr It's a great day when you can bring something as nice as this home without even having to pay for it! Guy phones up and says he has an old anvil he would like to donate. It's been on his father's farm for about 100 years and it needs a good home as the farm is sold. He said it was heavy, and that was an understatement. Had to winch it from the ceiling beam and drive the trailer under it. Gave it a rub with a wire brush and could just read the words Peter Wright Patent, England. The numbers look like 3 - 0 - 21, which if I am correct would make it 357 pounds. It felt every bit of it. We have installed it on a stump (replacing a smaller anvil) and here it is:
July 2, 201412 yr Ausfire, who's a lucky bugger then, I've had to pay for all of mine so you got yours for the right price and it looks to be in good condition for a farm anvil. More pictures once you've been using it for while please!

July 7, 201412 yr Yes, lucky indeed. When you consider he could have got big money for that anvil on eBay. We wil certainly show our appreciation of his generosity.And, as an aside, I'm amazed at the interest this thread has created. I am greatly honoured to have made the 4000th reply!
July 7, 201412 yr This really didn't "follow" me home as much as it arrived under it's own power! I have been helping a couple friends move into their new home. They had this vice laying under a bench in the barn and not being used. They had noticed the ones I have in my shop and knew I could put it to good use! They dropped this by last week while I was out on the lake. Perfect!
July 7, 201412 yr got another anvil on sunday, it is just a baby one only markings I can find are 0 2 0 it weighs 56lbs about 26kg lots of rust and some pitting to the face and the edges are not very good the other items also came home with me

July 9, 201411 yr Even in Michigan I can sniff out an occasional deal! This wagon forge was built by a local smith, he based it on a sketch of a southern civil war wagon forge, he narrowed the wheel base for me so it will fit into the 5x10 enclosed trailer. It has an elasomeric paint on the canvass wrapped bellows, works like a charm, need just a bit of TLC, and I have some ideas of racks and tooling carraiges. Traded a Ruger mini 14 for the whole wagon!
