  1. Kinda an interesting way to control the air flow, goes to show there's more than one way to skin a cat.
  2. Knowing where in the world you are located helps with answers, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show location.
  3. Your materials, fire clay & bricks will work very well. In my bottom blast coal forge, I used fire clay to configure the fire pot 20 years ago and it's still going strong. The only thing I would change is the shape of the fire pot into a rectangle as opposed to a semi circle, make it easier to clean out.
  4. Yep Attwood for sure, should serve you well. Don't know if you have seen this thread yet, bunch of great folks down by you.

  9. I would coat them with Ballistol. Leaves a clear coating, is food safe, dries hard and easy to apply if more coats are needed in the future.
  10. Looks like a specialized swage block or power hammer die to me.
  11. Pretty innovative mount. I would drill the top band and anchor it with lag bolts. You will probably find without them any sideways hammering could pop the band loose at the most inopportune time.
  12. Where in the world is it located? Hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show your location. Since this is a world wide forum with members from about 150 countries, It could help with the ID.
  13. Anvils a Beginners Guide is a sticky in this section. If you can't find someone to go with you it will help with deciding if you go alone and may give you some info for haggling room. If you edit your profile to show your location, you may be surprised how many members are close to you that may be willing to help. Did the seller say how much it weighs and how much is the asking price?
  14. You might not want to quote the post just before yours. We have members who still have to use dial up or pay for band width. This thread explains that. The quote feature
  15. Had a frustrating day. A member of our club (BOA) made a nifty little pair of scrolling tongs out of a horse shoe last month. He was gracious enough to let us take them home to try and duplicate them. He did say that the sides have to be mirrored for them to look right. All the scrolling tongs we have are regular sized with large jaws so I thought it would be neat to have a pair with small bits for tight scrolls, I can tell you that making mirrored sides is a lot harder than it sounds, after so many years making tongs with both sides identical to each other. Here are his tongs. The first thing I ran into was, I didn't have any horse shoes large enough to make them just like his. All the shoes I had were too small. I found one that was new and a lot thicker than used shoes but narrower. So I figured there was enough material to draw them out. I cut them in half and drew out the jaws. So far so good but to make a long story short, that was the last good part, realizing I didn't have enough material for the reigns I decided to draw them out. So much for them looking like a horse shoe after drawing enough for the reigns. Still all in all it was a good day even if my tongs wound up a little wonky.

  19. Speaking for myself, if I could get it for $200 U.S. I would go for it. If the seller thinks it's worth antique prices I'd pass.
  20. Very well said Frosty. I've learned the same lessons from my dogs. Still leaves a little hole in the heart when they cross over the Rainbow Bridge. One can only hope they will be there to greet us when it's our turn.

  23. Welcome to IFI Jay, I suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST Bottom blast leads itself better for coal/coke but can be made to work with charcoal. You definitely need to construct a fire pot so the fire is deeper and not so spread out. The forge pan you have would be good for a side blast which works better with charcoal. Might take a look at the JABOD threads for ideas. You are probably getting too much air with the hair drier and no way to regulate the air.
  24. OK but since no one has answered that has first hand experience with the Kerrihand and you didn't clarify that the hammer you are interested in is actually a Kerrihard which has been discussed in the past, I guess we can't help you if you are too busy to do a little research.
  25. If you do a search (like recommended in the Read this First thread) you will find 36 threads about the Kerrihard.
