  3. Welcome to IFI... We won't remember that once leaving this post, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show location. READ THIS FIRST That thread will help you get the best out of the forum. You might want to look into the OZ Roll Call Thread in Everything Else. Great bunch folks from down under.
  4. If it doesn't fit get a bigger hammer. Thanks for the link, gotta know we love old tool catalogs.
  5. Absolutely not only hold off, but do not mill, grind or weld on the hardened face ever. Plenty of discussions about that here. As far as the availability of anvils here there are a few but most are in "antique" shops and are outrageously priced. You might also want to look into using the quote feature. The quote feature
  6. Yep... listen to frosty, best idea, a place of honor is needed.
  7. That's a possibility but wonder if the sandstone would stand the heat. We envisioned a place to sit with a favorite adult beverage, watch the sunset and commune with nature, living in the woods as we do. Also when tolling the anvil, it would be the perfect place and that little anvil rings like a bell. Seems that ringing the anvil is happening all too often lately.
  8. We raise a pretty good crop of rocks around here. There is a large sandstone bluff out of the side of our hill. At the base was two large pieces that had slid out that weigh about 1,100 pounds each. For years Debi & I have been wanting to do something with them because they were sort of in the way of our drive through truck port. Our neighbor down the road had a large fairly flat stone next to the driveway that he gave to us. It measures 26X28X12 inches and weighs about 800 pounds. I had a 16 pound RR track anvil that was used for a light bench anvil before getting a better one. Earlier this week we got ambitious moving all the rocks and came up with this, calling it stone & steel.

  11. From what I've read, the New Little Giant by Mayer Bros. is a good hammer. Ya done good IMHO.
  12. Well I say, ya done good, looks like she's ready to go to work. That small amount of mushrooming is not a problem, use it for a year like it is before thinking about any modifications. You don't want square edges on a working anvil. Around here the asking price on it would be about $700-750 and with a lucky bit of haggling maybe bought for $550.
  13. I had a Craftsman half inch ratchet that belonged to my grandfather that was stripped out. He used it to work on Franklin's and Pierce Arrow's. I took it to Sears in '79 and they gave me a new one no questions asked. I doubt that would happen today given their problems.
  14. The beer can in the bore is a pretty good indicator of size about a 9 1/2 inch bore .
  15. Welcome to IFI... I always suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST Like Frosty said, editing your profile to show location and pictures will help with questions/answers. At $1.75 a pound U.S. you got a very good deal and I hope you have read about not grinding, milling or welding on the hardened face.
  16. The difference between a blacksmith and anyone else is that the blacksmith doesn't flinch and screw up the forge weld! ~ anvil It is an act of optimism whenever we put a piece of steel in a forge to make something from it. ~ ThomasPowers
  17. I would also, maybe include the funeral memorial card with a forged frame for his wife.

  20. Knowing where in the world you are located will help along with pictures (not too large). Hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show location in this thread. READ THIS FIRST The best leather handle for reducing shock is a stacked handle but not seeing your hammer I don't know if it would be practical to make.
  21. I agree with BIGGUNDOCTOR the edges look fine and I wouldn't want sharp edges. At close to a dollar a pound you got a heck of a deal.
