  1. Welcome to IFI... I always suggest reading this. READ THIS FIRST Where in the world you are located will have a big influence on the price, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show it. Showing pictures of it will help with answers.
  2. If you haven't read this yet, I always suggest it to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST In regards to quoting the post just prior to your answer, it is discouraged, explained in this thread. The quote feature It's my understanding the ram & pump determines the pressure, so upping the HP of the motor won't increase it. I could be wrong though, I'm not an expert in forging presses.
  3. We have some colorful road names too, like Possum Trot and Goat Ranch Road to name a couple.
  4. Might want to read about quoting. Quoting the post just ahead of yours is frowned upon. It uses bandwidth and a lot of members have to rely on dial up or pay for bandwidth. The quote feature
  5. Welcome to IFI... I always suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST Finding anvils kinda depends on where in the world you are located, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show it. Have you tried the TPAAAT approach? Never heard of an SH anvil.
  6. Mostly personal choice. I make tongs out of round stock all the time.
  7. Here is one in better light/setting. Still need to put some felt under the base thinking light green like water.
  8. A friend of mine set up shop in one of those rental storage shed places. He got permission from the owner/manager to move his coal forge outside in front of the door when forging. He would always draw a crowd when he was working and it turned into an impromptu hammer in time. The only draw back was no electricity but a small portable generator would run his small power tools. Other renters would set up weekend yard/garage sales in their spaces and he would sell a lot of his doo-dads through them.
  9. Looks like the dogs are saying keep em both and I agree with them. It would make a good one for heavy work at 344 pounds.
  10. The nails look good to me. Wish I had your talent and imagination for critters.
  11. My wife is quite the fly fisher and fly tier. She was out fishing today with her group and caught 10 Rainbow Trout (catch & release area). I played in the shop while she was away and came up with this. Made from all small pieces of scrap. The base is from a long forgotten project and is 7/16 inch thick plate with the hole already in it. The rod is rebar and 13 inches tall and the hook & earthworm from small pieces of round rod. I had initially intended for it to be a trade item at our next BOA meeting which was to be a critter of choice. I thought an earthworm is a critter. When Debi came home she saw it on the counter and said oh my gosh, I love it and it's mine, you can make something else. I guess I'll make a stupid dragon or snail.
  12. The only thing I suggest is, don't double space your sentences. It's kinda frowned upon by the admin and you may get warned about it. your forge looks spot on and should work well for small work. Next thing you know you will be building a monster 2 burner.
  13. A friend of mine sound proofed his "music room" using the old style egg cartons (not the Styrofoam ones) that he got for free from someone he knew in the egg business. He glued the bottoms to all the walls and you could just barely hear the music standing outside the room.
  14. Vulcans Grill now has it's own section in Misc. Discussions. Who says the Admin dosen't listen to us. Thank you Glenn.

  17. We built ours using two 1 inch rigidized layers of Kaowool, a 1/2 inch layer of Satanite and a 1/4 inch layer of bubble alumina with enough to flatten the floor. It has held up very well after 2 years and reaches welding heat in no time Here is the thread if you care to look.
  18. It's called Vulcans Grill, in the Articles section. Kinda hard to find but has some great recipe ideas. Takes a lot of scrolling to get to it. Maybe Glenn could move it to Everything Else, just an idea. Staff note: Good idea

  20. I have learned over the years that there is no such thing. I have upgraded my garage/shop three times since building it in 1985. Now thinking about 3 phase.
  21. JHCC, just as long as it's peppered with G rated anecdotes we will dine on them. MIchael, my wife & mother bought me that same saw for my birthday in 1977, it's still going strong. One suggestion is to open the gear box and lube it occasionally. Since you don't know how many hours are on it, that would be the first thing I would do. Oh and I had to build a replacement hand wheel for the vise. Great price BTW.
  22. Actually, I used the fire clay straight without any sand. Fire clay has a good amount of grog in it and we had a bunch of it from the pottery studio days. I just let it dry for about a week then built a fire to cure it. If using plain bentonite clay, sand is mixed in to basically make it fire clay at two to one clay to sand.
