  1. I use 89 octane non-ethanol fuel with Stadil added. I mix one gallon at a time with 50 to1 oil mix which is used in both the saw and leaf blower so the fuel & spark arrester wasn't the problem. I had checked that along with the spark plug and fuel & air filters. The pole saw had less than 5 hours on it and the service center said it was a defective carburetor. It is running fine now. The funny thing is the carburetor does not have the hi & lo adjusting screws only the idle screw and it was idling fine but wouldn't accelerate. On some Echo equipment the hi & lo screws are under plastic plugs, which are taken out to adjust them. This one does not have them and instead of a butterfly throttle plate, it has a barrel throttle plate that raises as it turns like some motorcycles I have owned. Thanks for the tips though, in case I had missed something who knows maybe someone else has the problem.
  2. RR rail makes good power hammer dies, so when you build yours keep that in mind.
  3. I like to use it to keep them mining data and when they run across most of my searches, they scratch their heads and say wwwaaattt.
  4. The help we are giving you is accurate. The first piece of advice I always tell someone is "do no harm". I have "overhauled" 4 Champion blowers and can tell you the farther you take it apart, the more problems you will create. Just looking at the picture, I would say you have a number 40 or 140 blower. There are no replacement parts available for those old blowers, so if you mess one up you will have to make it or find another blower for use as donor parts. I have no problem cleaning decades old caked gunk out of blowers using kerosene and a parts cleaning brush. One time I took the blower to a car wash and used the high pressure hose with soap (like washing a car) and it came out spotless. All that was then needed was to put some gear oil in it and use it. I'm betting the folks at your local smith club who have experience with those old blowers will tell you the same thing. Peace out Branden
  5. Do like I did, get her interested in the hobby. I'm afraid I've created a monster though because every time we go to the flea market or yard sales, I hear oh I like that and just instinctively dig out my wallet.
  6. The ball bearing bling is a great idea ausfire. Don't know if y'all remember that I had a gas powered pole saw stolen a couple of years ago. I used to keep it under the carport attached to the garage on a couple of spikes horizontal. Anyway I replaced it with a new Echo pole saw and had it stored inside the locked garage vertically up against the wall. Well it quit running a couple of weeks ago. It would start but not accelerate to cutting speed. I couldn't adjust the carburetor because it doesn't have any adjusting screws and the manual says to take it to an Echo dealer to get it adjusted (something to do with California emissions). Well the closest Echo dealer is 70 miles from us so we trucked it over there. It is still under warranty and the dealer replaced the carburetor for free. Running great again. I got to thinking maybe because I had it standing on end when not in use was what messed up the carburetor. Today I fired up the forge and made a couple of simple drive hooks to store it horizontal in the new addition. All total took about an hour, didn't need fancy.
  7. I saw that post before it was removed. Didn't sound like it dealt with forges, but was trying to start a political fight.
  8. A magnet will tell you if it sticks it's steel.
  9. Ike Doss would say to me "You going to hit it or look at it", as my steel started to cool off. In other words, while I was trying to figure out how & where to hit it, time was a wasting. He taught me to have a plan in place and tools at hand before taking the steel out of the fire and move rapidly to the anvil.
  10. The vise you have is a Fisher, made in Trenton NJ. I believe the chain is still available although not made for Fisher vises but will require some fitting. I can't see the damage in the pictures, don't know what you are calling the shoulder, so don't know if it is repairable. I'm sure others who are more familiar with the Fisher's will be along shortly. I did a quick search like this on Google Trenton vise iforgeiron.com and came up with several threads, this is but one. (substitute fisher for Trenton for more threads)
  11. I had the opportunity to buy Toyota stock for a dollar a share. I would go back and say Buy it.
  12. Welcome aboard Baz... Have you seen this yet? A great bunch there. OZ roll call - Everything Else - I Forge Iron
  13. I have made some hammer and hatchet handles from old baseball bats, that I always pick up for around a dollar at yard sales. They last a very long time and I can customize them to fit my hand.
  14. For an idea of how to use hardy tools without a hardy hole, check out this thread. https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/66129-horse-shoer-swages/?tab=comments#comment-700144
  15. As far as dampening the ring, a bead of cheap latex calking compound between the anvil base and stand will make it very quiet.
  16. one tip I can give is to use your favorite search engine like Google and do a search like this Johnson forge site:iforgeiron.com I just did that and got 879 results, maybe one of those threads it will help you.
  17. I thought if you were close to me, I could swing by and give a hand as I used one of those forges in High school shop class. We won't remember your location once leaving this post, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show it and so many answers depend on knowing it.
  18. Charcoal continues to burn even without air blast. One way to conserve is to sprinkle it with water when done forging. I use a water sprinkler can like this one I made out of an empty O2 cylinder with an old fire tool handle and holes drilled in the bottom. Works well with coal/coke too. I scoop water out of the slack tub.

  20. BTW: Welcome to IFI, Probably be better to ask your questions on the forum as opposed to PM. If you ask someone over PM none of the expert forage builders/designers will see it and some of the answers you get may be wrong.
