    Hi Twandawg, welcome aboard. There are a number of people on the forum from Michigan, not exactly sure where all from. Sounds like you got a good start. 4' pipe wrench? Wow. I need to get me one of those!

    Bigb, why not just weld on the rebar and make the tongs to start with. You can work on Using the tongs once you have some that work better then what you have now. If you got it, use it.

    set all the chains on the chair tonight and bent the backing for the heart. off of Big Guns advice I tried a horseshoe heart that didnt pan out then went on to try to forge something that wound up to be cast iron and failed. life goes on....,move on and forward. BigGun,I'll let you know tomorrow.

    JHCC, they accept pretty rough styling as long as it holds up to the tests. Doubt the printer would hold up to the time limit itself.

    Yeah Aus, I googled them and the tail is spot on. closest thing we have here in my area are salamanders but they are amphibians and pretty small so... no fun lizards here. Maybe I should introduce some shifty lizards into the wild around here.

    Yeah I have to clean mine here and there when it gets "gunked up" then it's like new again. I can usually get by killing the air and poking it around. I like mine a lot. Eventually I will build another but same thing with me, just want to keep forging.

    Many questions have been asked and answered here on IFI from people just starting out. It is better to ask before jumping into something you don't know much about. Also researching is important as well. There is A Lot to read and research just in these forums on almost any blacksmith related topic. If you have trouble with the search function here, try a search engine with iforgeiron after what you are searching for. That should bring up topics on this site. As always asking is good. Asking questions with some base knowledge behind it to fully understand the answers is better.

    Others have said before on here, just because you have it dosnt mean it's the best option to use for what you want to make. There was a guy I worked with in an autobody shop who would often go around asking everyone else in the shop what the best "easiest" way to do "whatever task" was. After all the advice from other experienced techs he would still do it how He thought would be easiest, and usually needed help after he messed it up, or would take forever on something that could have been way easier. Sometimes you have to move something out of the way to access what you need to get to.

    ASO= anvil shaped object. We use the term to describe what you have there. It's shaped like an anvil but won't work well as one. Generally cast iron is too soft and brittle for use as an anvil. As we stated before, a chunk of steel will work well. Just because it's shaped like an anvil dosnt make it one. What makes an anvil is the function.

    lets see, made a couple horse shoe samples, worked on a chair a bit more that I've had in mind,( will have a heart backing), and got some ideas for an armadillo commission.

    Being cast iron I wouldn't trust it for heavy hammering. Maybe light stuff. Could break it right off.

    Relax a bit. There are many ways to skin a cat" so to speak". I personally like cats lol.

    Just remember there are more ways to go. Charles Stevens has a good post on "just a box of dirt" http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/44842-just-a-box-of-dirt-or-a-simple-side-blast-forge/ there are many ways to build a forge. The key is to make something that works and get started. You can always see what works for what You have to work with. Mine works for Me. Crazy Ivan and I have even forged a couple @3lb. Hammers with it, tho the inch deeper pot may have worked better for those. Do, learn, improve.

    with all the tools you will have access to in your auto shop class you could make all kinds of other useful blacksmithing tools. Search, Guillotine tool. There are many other Good projects you could make with those tools at hand, and you will be ahead of the game.

    yup. Hey not trying to discourage you at all. We want you to succeed. You will learn Many more useful skills getting forging even using a sledgehammer head as an anvil, then spending the time and effort trying to make that work.

    I don't think it is worth trying to turn that into an anvil. You would be way better off trying to get a block of steel to use, build a base for it, and get straight to forging. I'm not saying anything about welding skills, I just think it would be a lot of wasted time and effort when there are way better solutions out there to get and use for an anvil. keep that guy around as an ornament. Many Fab shops have drops or even chunks of good steel that could possibly be had for not too much money. Scrap yards? even asking around. Search up TPAAAT. Good luck on your start!

    The issue with that would be ash going into the blower or collecting in the blower pipe. Even with a T fitting some ash can collect on the "shelf" part of the air inlet with the blower off. With a Y fitting it would direct almost half the ash into the blower pipe.
