  1. Well it's an improvement in weight and a small improvement in mass and hardness. steel is way better then a cast iron ASO.
  2. One should work fine then. Have you tried a rebound test to see about hardness? Either way they should get you started. You could mount one flat and mount one round side up for better drawing out.
  3. Are they steel or cast iron? If they are steel I would just mount one up to a stump, smooth the surface, maybe flatten one edge, radius the edges and get hammering. If they are cast iron they are good for counter weights. If it works as an anvil, and functions like an anvil, it's an anvil.
  4. I'm surprised it's working that high up from the forge. Looks like a nice hood. I'd double check but I think you are atleast good up to 4-500degrees F before the galvy is at risk. Keep up the testing.
  5. Have you tried checking out any scrap yards? Also you could look into trying to get a chunk of steel from a metal fabrication shop. Sometimes they have left over stock and are willing to sell some.
  6. If you think of it as an investment on a tool that will last you a lifetime + then that isn't so much is it? As long as it has good rebound.
  7. I see what you mean JHCC. If I'd have made sharper bends in the 5 pieces or use 10 sections welded up it would be easier to wind up with sharper angles. Thanks.
  8. Thanks Jimmy. Templehound, I know exactly what you mean. It would be easy to do at any time, so I will leave that option open to them. And that you for the compliment. Aus, it took a bit of tweaking and fiddling with. Yup, got some critters kicking around the shop lol.
  9. All I can say is I think Thomas Powers wants his anvil back lol.
  10. Did another heart a few weeks ago out of one section of pipe, and a fleury de lis, out of many manipulated pieces of pipe, for my old Boy Scout troop tonight. Heart is 1 1/2" tall and 1 5/8" wide. The fleur de lis is 4 1/2" tall by 3 5/8 wide.
  11. There are a few more places I havnt looked at yet. If they don't pan out I will have to ask. I'm probably paying more for galvanizing that I have to strip off anyway.
  12. Nice! A friend just brought me over a handful of rusty ones. The ones I find to buy are galvy. coated and need an acid dip to remove the coating, then neutralized.
  13. Lol we could make up a giant spider that will spring out in attack mode when the door is opened.
  14. Thats a nice looking anvil stand Millhand. I would paint the stand. just my preference.
  15. Yeah JHCC, That's what I was thinking of trying with the nail. I have seen that video and that is what made me think of it. Now to see if there is enough meat on a nail.
  16. Another nice batch Aus. My brother asked me for something a little more "manly" for his hunting room. I'm thinking I might attempt to make some antlers on one of these. Not sure if there is enough material there but I'll be giving it a try soon.
  17. Yeah ours is off the good old inch so you are using about .035 wire.
  18. Lol it's ok, I read "blacksmith". We all get off exacts at times. No worries.
  19. But as big a one as you can. Mine is 110v and less then I need. It will struggle with 3/16" but thin stuff it will cut like butter. I'm thinking a more heavy duty cutter may be in the cards. I use .023 wire on most all I do. Works on body work and sculpture so far. I build up on larger stuff. But once I start making large sculptures I'd like to run a heavier duty welder with .030 or .035. Or finally justify the tig.
  20. Ugh! One of the "fell into a pile of unforgivable things" stories. I have several of those. Prayers for you and your back Robert Well I realized I never posted mine the wood stand is due for a new stand I'm thinking a 3 leg stand, but this is what I got and what I work on.
  21. But clutter is fun. It's like trying to find Waldo.
