  1. Learning experience to start testing metals Before you use them for some applications. I've been there.
  2. What did the spark test tell you? My guess is that it could be cast iron.
  3. A guy I work with does side work and replaced this one because the mount brackets are rusted out at the bolt locations. Still plenty enough there to hold coal, just not enough to hold it to the truck.
  4. It has been said on here many times, Just because you have it, doesn't make it the right thing to use.
  5. Wish I coulda watched. Hope my friend recorded it. Please fill us in with details when able.
  6. Theo, You never cease to amaze with some really innovative blades. Those are really cool. The dark side of me is thinking a skull and cross bones pommel with a halloween store severed finger and droplets of blood in the resin handle...... Ooh, I find dried up bugs while disassembling cars all the time. Some insects in a resin handle would be cool....yeah, what you are doing is unlimited on awesome design. Pump em out before someone steals the design. Keep up the awesome work.
  7. Thought I kind of explained the why in my response. Sometimes I understand myself better then others understand what is going on in my mind lol. I'll try to get pictures tomorrow evening of the radius on my anvil if it helps explain.
  8. In all reality it's your anvil, make it suit your work that you do. I don't see any problem with taking down the sharp edges. I had a rough area at the edge of the sweet spot and ground it to a radius. It has been more helpful to me there since I have other types of edge to work on around the anvil.
  9. Well if it isn't fully functional then you would have to put a bunch of time and possibly money into it. He didn't say if or how well the blower works. The fire pot looks like it isn't seated because the bracket that holds the blower to the table is off and the weight of it is leaning the whole assembly. You need some more info and more thorough pictures to see the actual condition.
  10. 30 gallon barrels make a poor ladder as well. And trim above a garage door will not save you. Don't worry, my hip didn't bend the edge of the barrel and the back of my head didn't crack the concrete. Had to nail the trim back up tho.
  11. My thoughts as well. They sure make you concentrate on what your doing.
  12. Only one. Anything bigger and it might have pushed him out of the way looking for a real target.
  13. Just as I suspected. As bad as that time I was young and dumb and hunted a rabbit with my 30-30. Didn't go over well.
  14. Would be more easily removable with some welded on loops or handles of either edge. Nice forge!
  15. I have had them bounce through inside my welding helmet, Luckily not hitting my eye. I do sometimes even wear safety glasses under my welding helmet. The weld bbs that get in the ear are really painful. Yeah, sometimes I wear ear plugs too. don't forget the respirator lol. When at my big wire wheel I double up with a face shield And safety glasses. Also the leather welding jacket and maybe the apron too. That thing really flings the wires.
  16. Blacksmithing? eh.. just some lil burns, a few srapes and cuts and not the worst lil bit I've had stuck in my eye. Worst injury was a lil wood carving accident many years before. Bad things can always happen. Just Pay Attention to what you are doing to mitigate injury. Then again sometimes you think about what you are doing, without thinking about HOW you are doing it.
  17. I like that you made it out of horse shoes. I think the eyes turned out well. Are they bolted on?
  18. Totally agree with that. $50. Would be too much in my opinion.
  19. IF it is cast steel And has good rebound, $2.20 a pound for an anvil in good shape is a good price where I'm from. Then you have to add in fuel cost. IF it's a good anvil then it will last several lifetimes if it isn't abused. So that is a tool that will out last you. Can you forge enough stuff in a lifetime to make your money back and then some? Just make sure it IS a good anvil and not cast iron.
  20. Worst case is you could drill larger holes in that plate concentrated within a 2" or so circle right above the tuyere, but you may still lose a little pressure due to the larger dead space between the bolt heads and the plate. Should work a lot better until you find a welder.
  21. OHH! The goodies! Nice stuff EMC. I see many a good uses.
  22. It will all come down to if it has good rebound. If it's cast steel, good. If it's cast iron, generally bad. Doing a rebound test on it before you buy it should tell you a lot. You can get by with out a pritchel hole by making a bolster plate. the anvil "looks" cast steel to me but You need to check it before you buy it. Good luck.
