  1. Hi.....just came across your post about your trailer on IFI. I have to set up a trailer as a blacksmith shop due to local building bylaws.....only allowed so much square footage of building on a given property, and so am thinking of building one on a flatdeck trailer. Is that what you have....I don't mean for using at displays where you work outside the trailer.....I'm intending to set up and work inside the trailer. Any help, comments or photos would be great.

    Thanks,

    Simon

      Good Morning,

Our 'Flyin' Forge' is 17 feet long with another 4 feet for the reach, the box is 6 feet wide, the sides are 7 feet tall. When both sides are up, it is almost 20 feet wide. The sides are the awning that protects the Blacksmiths, from the weather. There is a 2"x3" rectangular tubing as a stiffner for the sides, running horizontal to the ground. This also acts as a rain gutter and diverts the rainwater out an end. There are 2 safety props for each side, 2" difference in length to allow you to choose which way the water runs. The safety props are made from exhaust tubing. The coal forges pull out sideways, about a foot. When pulled out, the smoke pipe goes straight through the roof. The Blacksmith stands on the ground to work. We have a double, swinging overhead chain block to lift the Anvils and Post Vices out of the trailer without anyone getting hurt.

The sides are hinged at the top. The sides are opened with hydraulic cylinders. The hydraulic pump is a Chrysler starter motor, chain driven to a power steering pump. A reservoir extension on top of the power steering fluid reservoir, is made from a 6" dia. steel pipe, 24" long.

The hydraulic control valves are water/oil hand valves from a hardware store. $1.29 each x 4.

Don't think hard! Think safety! Think Simple K.I.S.S.

Yes, we have to do a little maintenance now and again. We have been using it for over 20 years.

  2. Hi all, Kanca anvils are now sold by Princess Auto up here in Canada....that's Harbour Freight to you guys down south! I'm very leery about this brand being sold by one of the big box stores....as with other manufacturers (Husqvarna, Lincold, Miller for example) traditionally the big box store version of the product is inferior in quality to the product sold by tool-specific dealers. Does anyone have any insight or comments on this...I do not want to invest money in an anvil that is inferior in quality and perhaps maybe even a "second", and I know that Kanca has had hardness issues in the past. Thoughts appreciated.
  3. Also just curious if those with a larger cylinder outside, and the forge inside could provide me a drawing or photo detailing the piping and hook up they use? Thx
  4. Thanks to everyone for their responses....the problem I have is that the LPG supplier isn't keen to put in a 480lb cylinder in the event that I will only get it filled "perhaps" once a year. The rent per year is Can$80, and the propane fillup cost is .75c per litre. Still thinking I might be better off geting two 100lb cylinders, and using a manifold to join them. Downside is I'd have to haul them to get them filled.
  5. Hi all, Quick question for those with propane forges. I am wondering what size of cylinder to get for the shop I'm setting up? I'm thinking of getting a 100lb cylinder and mounting it on the outside of the shop wall, and run a line through and to the forge. I just wonder form those with experience how long a 100lb cylinder would last if used maybe 10hrs a week? Also, I have the opportunity to get a 480 lb cylinder from the local LPG supplier that would be refilled on site and also mounted outside the shop. Is this overkill? Any and all help appreciated. Thanks.
  6. Hi guys, Just wondering what your thoughts are on having a permanent stationary shop in an enclosed traile. My reasons for this are the the local regional district restricts the number of square feet that can be allocated to buildings...and on my lot I'm maxed out, so cannot get permission to build an extra building for a shop. I'm thinking double axle 8 to 8 1/2 wide by maybe 16 with extra height as I'm 6'2". This is going to be a permanent shop even tho I will leave the wheels on it to avoid problems with the local building inspector. Any and all thoughts appreciated. Thanks.
  7. Hi Guys, In the process of converting a 20lb propane cylinder into a forge. The dimensions before Kaowool are 9" by 12". Allowing for 2" Kaowool I worked the volume out to be 8"x9" = 452.39 cu inches. How will a single burner perform in a forge of this volume? I've read that there should be one 3/4" burner per 350 cu inches so I fall short....will just the one burner have a significant difference on my forging ability? Not into forge welding at this stage. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
  8. Hi guys, Just got started building a forge from a 20 lb propane cylinder, the plan that I'm following I found on line. I have two questions... 1. Most of the propane cylinder forge designs I've seen show the burner entering the cylinder at an angle....is this necessary, or can the burner enter from the top and point straight down? 2. With 2" of kaowool throughout as insulation and sealed with ITC 100 would one burner be sufficient for a forge this size? I'm thinking the chamber to be heated will be approx. 8" x 8" in size? Thanks for any advice you may have.u
  9. I've asked for details from the anvil itself....make/maker, and whether the seller knows if it's cast iron or steel. It's a four hour drive for me if the anvil is worth it, and I guess that's my next question. For a hobby blacksmith like myself, is this even worth considering as a working anvil, and do you think it would be worth approx $ 485 US? Thanks.
  10. Hi all, Just recieved this photo of an anvil for sale....was wondering what your immediate thoughts are? I feel it looks cast but am a novice so not sure? Also, does the absence of a pritchel hole mean anything to be concerned about? Thanks for any and all advice. Simon Sorry.....forgot to insert the photo....here it is.
  11. BTW, does anyone have photos or diagrams of mounting a post vice like this with no leg? I have looked briefly on the internet but the ones I found all seem to have legs? Thanks.
  12. Thanks Slag and ThomasPowers....ThomasPowers, could you supply me a quick sketch of the mounting system you suggest? It sounds really solid, but I'm not sure I'm getting the right picture from the text:-) Thnaks
  13. Thanks Slag.....this is an 8"er, and I haven't had any thoughts on how to mount it yet. If you have any suggestions or can point me in the right direction I'd be grateful. I was thinking about a very large heavy wood set up. Thanks again.
  14. Hi Everyone, New here with a question about a post vice I've come across. I'm wondering if the post/leg is broken off or if this is simply a different design? The vice is in excellent shape, and so I'm also wondering if it is broken, would I be able to make it serviceable once again? ( Maybe weld a piece in place?) Thanks for any help and advice.
  15. Thanks to everyone for the replies.... "It's common for new comers to want perfect tools, especially when they don't know how to use them or what they need. Another good example is asking advice after the fact." Actually Frosty, I was gifted this anvil and have yet to use it...how is that asking after the fact? I'm located in Barriere...and no, I wasn't at the Fernie Forge but would like to in the future maybe. Ironwolf....I will get some pics up as soon as I can....thanks for everyone's input.
