  1. Only one. Anything bigger and it might have pushed him out of the way looking for a real target.
  2. Just as I suspected. As bad as that time I was young and dumb and hunted a rabbit with my 30-30. Didn't go over well.
  3. Would be more easily removable with some welded on loops or handles of either edge. Nice forge!
  4. I have had them bounce through inside my welding helmet, Luckily not hitting my eye. I do sometimes even wear safety glasses under my welding helmet. The weld bbs that get in the ear are really painful. Yeah, sometimes I wear ear plugs too. don't forget the respirator lol. When at my big wire wheel I double up with a face shield And safety glasses. Also the leather welding jacket and maybe the apron too. That thing really flings the wires.
  5. Blacksmithing? eh.. just some lil burns, a few srapes and cuts and not the worst lil bit I've had stuck in my eye. Worst injury was a lil wood carving accident many years before. Bad things can always happen. Just Pay Attention to what you are doing to mitigate injury. Then again sometimes you think about what you are doing, without thinking about HOW you are doing it.
  6. I like that you made it out of horse shoes. I think the eyes turned out well. Are they bolted on?
  7. Totally agree with that. $50. Would be too much in my opinion.
  8. IF it is cast steel And has good rebound, $2.20 a pound for an anvil in good shape is a good price where I'm from. Then you have to add in fuel cost. IF it's a good anvil then it will last several lifetimes if it isn't abused. So that is a tool that will out last you. Can you forge enough stuff in a lifetime to make your money back and then some? Just make sure it IS a good anvil and not cast iron.
  9. Worst case is you could drill larger holes in that plate concentrated within a 2" or so circle right above the tuyere, but you may still lose a little pressure due to the larger dead space between the bolt heads and the plate. Should work a lot better until you find a welder.
  10. OHH! The goodies! Nice stuff EMC. I see many a good uses.
  11. It will all come down to if it has good rebound. If it's cast steel, good. If it's cast iron, generally bad. Doing a rebound test on it before you buy it should tell you a lot. You can get by with out a pritchel hole by making a bolster plate. the anvil "looks" cast steel to me but You need to check it before you buy it. Good luck.
  12. Yup Aus, Tacks are good for a look to see if it's right. Tho these were serious tacks and were a pain to cut but that can happen lol. RLF, Those are really nice designs. That condor must have taken some time with all the twists and how it was assembled. wow.
  13. I have had a bad habit of wearing Mechanics gloves when welding in the past. The inner part of the fingers is not a good material for welding and molten metal balls always find their way in between my fingers. Hmm., Cant think of too many places that welding slag Hasnt burned me. Being wedged under a car while welding and finding out your shirt is on fire will make you move fast. Hot bits landing on the lower front laces of my boots burning the boot lace in half.
  14. It looks like it could be a post puller to me as well.
  15. That's looking good Pancho.
  16. I understand now The rat tail would work I think. Then they would all have tails to hang from. You are right tho, we can always just make another one. I'm inspired now and will have to give it a shot.
  17. Nice overall profile. perhaps a grinding jig would help you out. they are easy to make. As a beginner I find it tough getting the depth even.
  18. Awesome work JLP. They are quite well done but I'm thinking the knife lacks anything to tie it in with the fork and spoon tho. I Have seen sets that are like that but were I to make a "set" I think having a tie in feature would be nice. Please don't take that wrong. The work is excellent. I doubt I could get two pieces as similar as you got the design of the fork and spoon, and it's all proportionate. Just an observation.
  19. I'm the type that likes the antique/weathered look myself. Some things do well with it but some don't I guess. .45-70, Thats for small game right? Well when you can, Keep up the good work. The rasp snake looks great in that last picture as well.
  20. Now That puts it into perspective. That's a big guy. Love the way the pommel looks. I like the overall look and shape of it. Only thing off in my eye is seeing the sanding/ grind marks. I'll have to look into that blackening stuff.
  21. Nice! Handle looks great. I like the "darkness" of it. Any better blade profile pictures?
  22. You could make a block to go in the hardy hole that has less radiused edges for tasks that require it.
  23. When I made my first tongs after studying his tutorial, they turned out pretty bad. I went back and watched it several more times with having actually tried it and things became clearer. Keep at it.
  24. I should have mentioned that was a before picture of how I had the wings on wrong.
