  1. Glen; I'm at the Presbyterian RUST facility in Rio Rancho NM; they LOVE the In Rust We Trust T shirt; I'm encouraging them to order their own!   Thomas "Dane Brammage" Powers

  2. Just back on; went to the ER for some odd BG readings Nov 10; brain surgery!!!!!!. Glioblastoma; prognosis perhaps 8 months.....zo I have a good excuse for brain glitches right now!!!!!!! (sounds like I should be planning a sale t 2023 Q-S....)
  3. Your work is characterized by a certain "calm elegance" very appealing in this Guernica world these days!
  4. I've known a maker that would silver solder such breaks back together. Hard solder with solder and flux designed to work with knife steels...
  5. I had a friend who did Renaissance Europe cooking. I'd make kitchen stuff for her and she would feed me on long SCA campouts---including twice where we had peacock cooked over an open fire or baked in a dirt beehive oven. I sure miss her----especially as her son sold off a lot of hand forged items that were ON LOAN to her from me... I didn't care enough to go to the sale though, only 3 hours each way...
  6. Yes asking folks local to you that may use coal is a better idea than asking folks in Australia, Austria, Norfolk Island, etc... We bought 500# of NICE bituminous coal at Quad-State in Ohio and hauled it back to New Mexico this year... MUCH superior to local sources out here! (Why most smiths out here use propane.)
  7. Is Igor happy? much easier getting rid of chunks than complete bodies...
  8. And then their are Prions, (BSE) that need a toasty 700+ degF to be rendered harmless. I've made a bunch of SCA eating knives from used sewer snake but remind folks that GLOWING is above even Prion survivable temps!
  9. How about: ====\ lapped with \====. I make a lot of Penannulars for the SCA and use heavy copper grounding wire---found a full untouched roll at the restore for US$5 once with a Montgomery Wards tag on it. (I remember MW going out of business when my Daughter who is now the Vet was a toddler!) I have a set of needle nose pliers I use for the tight end bends; both for copper and steel. Students get the talking to about using my non-ferrous cold work tools on hot steel and to ASK if they are not sure----I remind them that there are thousands of sq miles of desert out here waiting for a shallow grave(s). And that the Yodel dogs need to eat too!
  10. My wife claims working in my smithy cures "constipation of the soul"!
  11. Rugby? Has your life and health insurance carrier banned you for life + several eons? I once met a professional knifemaker that had one hand amputated. He was ingenious in finding out ways to do things that did not require both hands!
  12. Ditto. Taught the "intro to smithing" class at the University yesterday. With the money from the Gun Show I can pay off my debt to the New Little Giant company and start rebuilding my 25#'r without feeling guilty about installing new parts that haven't been paid for yet... Wife is very happy. Got a cord of wood delivered and stacked this morning, cedar, US$250 for a full cord+.
  13. My Father was; one of my earliest memories was attending a Field Day with him and how impressed I was that the Emergency units were so small---integrated circuits vs the tube ones everyone else used. When we moved to the D.C. area his friends bought him the largest power tube usable by a non-commercial station as a going away present. Which was never put into use; but was moved in it's custom made box a half dozen times till he finally gave in and sold off his OLD equipment.
  14. Had my minions stop by to help load for the blacksmithing class at New Mexico School of Mining and Technology tomorrow morning; blight and surly!
  15. I like the sound of "Crew served Weapons"! (A recoilless rifle you can even be pointing the wrong end at the enemy and it will take them out if they are close enough!)
  16. I'm with JHCC, that curved side would be great for drawing out over!
  17. Got any Machinist Friends? If it was mine I'd trade one some "brown pop" for having the bore trued up.
  18. 100 pounds is nothing. I've moved power hammers all by myself using prybars and rollers...(Need to go out to the shop and get the propane/gasoline generator out of the bed of the truck---my wife bought it at the scrapyard!)
  19. If you ever visit Billy's watch out for that Twisted fellow; they look like they could give a right bad bite! Here I check my hearing protectors and shop gloves before putting them on.
  20. Depends a lot on the alloys involved. If the metal being hit is hot and soft hardness is not a big factor in dies. Abrasion Resistance may play a larger roll; as scale is an abrasive.
  21. Not to mention agricultural uses like silage blowers and grain dryers, Mine ventilation, Etc and so on. Shoot I just picked up a large fan to ventilate my shop: 54" on a side with a 2blade propeller; runs off 220 VAC. Fills the garage door opening fairly well.
  22. Check that front foot; several IFI participants have AiA.
