  1. (And his Clavier was well tempered in that well as well!). Time to break out my vinyl copy of E Power Biggs plays Bach in the Thomaskirche; nothing like a bit of Toccata and Fugue in D minor to set a great Halloween mood!
  2. I built one based on the plans in Payne-Gallwey's "The Crossbow"; but I cheated on the prod; used one from a commercially made/sold crossbow that I found at a fleamarket. Failure modes were too scary! P-G advised folks to use his springmakers in Liege Belgium; of course there has been two world wars since he last used them... It was my term project for a Senior/Graduate level Medieval Studies course at the University. Given: write a research paper at that level or do a project; well the project won hands down. Though walking on the Campus wearing a Maille shirt and sword and carrying a crossbow was a bit adrenaline producing... Did you slant the cut where the prod rests so that the string does not touch the wood in it's travel?
  3. The Veteran Memorial park in Las Cruces NM includes a helicopter in it! I wonder how many car crashes it's caused as it looks from the road as if it's crashing.
  4. Drill two spaced holes on each end and put a loop of rope through them and tied inside the box. Make the loops long enough that they will put the carrying hand above the wood when used to lift it. (You can also run a pole through the loops on top of the box to carry a heavy one on several peoples' shoulders. Easy to "pull inside the box" when not needed. My oak one was made from a barn board I found in a flood spoil pile. I adzed it a bit cleaner and did a modified Mastermyr chest from it; forged all the nails in the basement of my house one winter in a 1 soft firebrick forge. Still together 20+ years later and demonstrates that ironworking is my craft! (Wood is what you burn to start the forge!)
  5. When I tweak my bottom blown coal forge for charcoal: I build 2 walls of fire brick about 4" apart and parallel and back fill with adobe from a stack of decaying adobe bricks that a previous owner of my house left me...
  6. I found that adding bars just under the opening edges helps strengthen a box and makes them easier to carry---just flop the lid open and back and there is a ridge to put your fingers under on both sides for a 2 person carry.
  7. Frosty; as I understand it, a tree "fell" on your "powerful and fell". One of my wife's favorite books is "The Oddity" by Homer Simpson... "Troy Delenda Est!" (JHCC can correct my spelling and grammar!)
  8. For my travel vise I have a "hand tamper tool" head I found at the scrapyard. The acorn fits in the handle hole and I made some foot long tent stakes from RR spikes that hold it against lateral forces. One of my in shop vises rests on/in a large buldozer blade edge; over a foot wide and 4 1.5" sq holes. (Same size as 3 of my anvils!)
  9. Wicon; are you gluing your Garters on?
  10. I once melted a terracotta pot in my forge; trying to use it as a kiln to do Y1K enamelling. Hopefully your clay is only colored terracotta and is not terracotta clay!
  11. Sure. I have also seen the opposite where they cast a concrete pyramid to hold the acorn above the floor level. Your post vise you can do whatever you want with it!
  12. But I want to melt and cast tungsten carbide in my Bic lighter heated forge! (About 5000 degF + some overheat for pouring...)
  13. One thing I learned is that making chests sturdy enough to sit on can be a real help in a campsite; I remember a couple of SCA Dukes using one of mine at a feast that had run out of chairs----500#+ with no problems!
  14. John; what's the correct temperature to draw a Clavier to? J.S.Bach must have known!
  15. Heard a couple of loud BOOMS this morning already from the EMRTC blast pads; I wonder if they were welding...
  16. "Winter Born" ? “For the warriors of Illium were those most powerful and fell,” Tyler said. “They were those born of winter. Rough translation of a fragment they think is part of the original Iliad cycle.” — John Ringo ["Live Free or Die", "Citadel", "The Hot Gate"] (Being myself born within a week of the winter solstice this quote stuck in my mind...)
  17. Just reread wiki about Jim Bowie's "Sandbar Fight"! He found bringing a knife to a gun fight quite useful---his opponents; however, didn't agree! "Bowie, rising to his feet, drew his knife and charged at Crain, who struck him so hard upon the head with his empty pistol that it broke and sent Bowie to his knees. Wright appeared, drew a pistol, and shot at the fallen Bowie, missing. Wright then drew his sword cane and stabbed Bowie in the chest, but the thin blade was deflected by his sternum. As Wright attempted to pull the blade free, Bowie reached up, grabbed his shirt, and pulled him down upon the point of his Bowie knife.[10][11] Wright died quickly " wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandbar_Fight
  18. If you need a term encompassing it all "heat treating" works fairly well.
  19. Sticky means you don't have to grip it very tightly for safety! I sometimes rub a bit of real bee's wax on handles and warm them in the dragon's breath to get them sticky...
  20. Forge weld extra thickness, arc weld extra thickness, explosive weld extra thickness; see the pattern?
  21. Make sure your "camping chest" doesn't rest in contact with the ground! As I recall the Netherlands tends towards rising damp!
  22. Have them make the next one with bolts on either side so you can apply it to the shaft without disassembly!
  23. Just make it from Tachyons! Just in Time, any time!
