  1. Or a great gift got a child or grandchild's shop!
  2. If it gets to 50 degF I can probably sneak out to the shop or even the scrapyard. (One of my "Forge Buddies" mother has offered to be my "watcher" at the scrapyard for me....you do what you can!)
  3. Home; the joy of sleeping in my own bed and eating my "normal" diet and staying close to the wood stove. It's a bit chilly; but the sun is up and the passive solar house will soon be *hot*!
  4. Tonight some high octane eggnog and a massive sleep in my OWN BED! Got home and have a fire in the woodstove; life looking up!
  5. Too bad you are over 100; I've know several talented smiths working in their 80's and 90's...
  6. Passive solar house; my wife said it was 90 degF in the main collector room the other day. We hope to be running the wood stove for the weather in the teens the next coupe of days.
  7. And then the looks on peoples faces when you lay out oddball dimensions using set a dividers...balancing steel on a finger to get the 1/2 way point, etc...
  8. I think they are hoping for strong wind to blow all those postvises and blowers onto their vehicle(s)... I'm still watching way too much YT; my wife doesn't want me in the shop without "adult supervision..." Hopefully tomorrow after the staring match with the gamma ray knife I'm heading back home! (end of 10 sessions; perhaps 5 more after discussions with the Dr.)
  9. Better you than me for such temps ! They are putting a bed in the great room by the wood stove for me---I've already called dibs on the woodstove side, the clerestory windows' side can be reserved for Jo Ann....Down comforters are a comfort!
  10. We have a perlite mine in Socorro NM. Sticks together well. I have thought of trying a massive carved monolithic version...till it cracks.
  11. When I had my first shop floor section cast the contractor had a joke about "Do you know when concrete starts cracking?" "While it's still in the truck!" Did a great job out here in the desert anyway, 20 years on. I wanted strength over "pretty" and he did right by me. (I mentioned that I was fine using "leftovers" from other builds so most of my shop is done with thicker stronger "older" stuff----win win; they got to "clean up" and get paid and I have extra trusses, thicker sheetmetal and heavier roll up doors....) My addition to that was very much in the same vein. 20'x60' total now. (And I'd like to put a carport on it too...)
  12. How big is the crane in it and how many power hammers? 40" capacity? Induction forges?
  13. I have been known to post here from time to time. Evenness of temp in tempering (and other HT) is a major factor. Note that even commercial HT places may have problems with long blades vs "compact" masses. Alloys can help. Immersion in evenly heated materials can help as well.
  14. Pep Gomez did an entire conference demo on container damascus with a broken arm---had surgery on it the day after the conference was over...
  15. Oil cups are on my "find an buy" list for the scrapyard. Nice to have3 a small pile of them for "reuse".
  16. Having seen a number of old cast iron forges crack when put back into use; I like steel bowled ones. My travel forge was made from the front door of a WWII jig borer found discarded. The firepot is an axle cover from a 1930's banjo rear end. About time to replace it as it's going on 30 years as a firepot and a lot of forge welding in it.
  17. It got eaten by the dog headed hammer....
  18. Management tends to like to be ABOVE the axe throwing lanes; WAY above! Build it out nice as one may inhabit it for a while under certain circumstances....though I am currently happy to have a one floor shop...
  19. We have a local Mom&Pop place that makes award winning breakfast burritos down near home. One of those in the mornings and no BG issues till a late lunchtime!
  20. My wife has been telling me that I'm not myself lately. Very annoying after a while....
  21. Gotta go down the road a bit for for 3ph; then it's buried service to get to the shop....For "personal" reasons my shop stuff is sorta on hold....
