  1. depending on where you are, look into the skyline, see where there might be some boiler smoke stacks from powerstations, mills etc, and go and see if there are any bricks in their scrap/rubbish piles. the local sugar mill has supplied me with at least 600 refractory bricks, and up to 100 refractory tiles (300mm sq by 50mm thick) free. they were more than happy to let me take them, and helped me with their forklift.
  2. take some beer to the scrappers!!!!! they will be eating out of your hand.
  3. hey swifden, any steam gear? boilers, engines, etc? where is it?
  4. that isnt "storage!" i would give it better storage than that!
  5. well in oz we call them a dog, and they are driven into the sleepers. we use small ones on the 2ft cane railways
  6. the one you are standing on is the closest i have seen to my anvil, but mine is 250lb (possibly) a joy to work on
  7. onya mate, good to see youse on here! we love seein newbys, no mater what level of skill, and it seems that you are well on your way!
  8. these are through hardened, i used to reforge and temper them, and we had some hire companies who used to argue that we could weld broken ones with a mig. we only had to do one, it came back next day, and there were no more arguments :P we used to cut the broken ones with a well cooled band saw, slow going, but worked well, and didnt ruin the temper.
  9. picker, it seems you need some beard protection that meets the safety specifications outlined in health and safety for facial hair preservation.
  10. hey andrew, keep an eye (and ear) out for someone selling a 25HP (or so) boiler for me!..... :) or ask some of your steam mates....
  11. had a lead on a boiler, exactly the right size for my hammer, but when i called up i got the old "you are about a year too late, it got scrapped" :(
  12. .ken, i hereby accuse you of being a genius. i love your hammers and their linkages.
  13. asked a bloke i work with today, reckons he knows of a monster anvil, on a cattle station he worked at....... details to be posted...... (when i get it :P )
  14. ok, this has gone on long enough, i feel you are discriminating against those who have no thumbs!!!! how would they feel about what is "THE RIGHT (OR WROUGHT) WAY TO FORGE"........ :P iam ambidextrous, so i piont my horns both ways !!!! :P
  15. not dead ..... sleeping. or maybe as a blacksmith tradesman i am a zombie..... as a trade- dying, wilting, or going into a form of long term hibernation, it has definately seen its autumn, it is now in its winter (will there ever be a spring?) as a hobby- it seems to be doing well, but the question was not "is backyard blacksmithing dying" or "are there less people interested in metal smithing, guild or otherwise"
  16. oh, i thought you had made a new blacksmith deodorant....... i'll just have to keep stinking...
  17. danger, brilliant work, but you are stalling, more hit less chat! how is the steam hammer! mine is just a dream at the moment... i feel like i am all talk.... you lot just wait till i get my beasty running! (i have a new boiler lead...... if it dont work out, i have nearly all the boiler ingredients, even new boiler tube, just no time!!!!!)
  18. hey i pulled a metal splinter out of my foot, i even had to make an incision first! I AM NOW A FULLY QUALIFIED DOCTOR!!!! (my wife would say vet!) that is how i feel when confronted by a first time basher telling me they are a blacksmith, when i did hard time for four years to get my trade ticket.
  19. every time i read it i get to the figure 17, 18 +19 part and lose concentration, because it isnt there!
