An old-school instruction manual by P. Wylie Davidson that is just what it says on the cover: “Specially adapted to meet the requirements of the instructor, the student, the craftsman, and the apprentice.” Good stuff. “Educational Metalwork” book in PDF

I'm new to this. I have tried chasing and repousse in the past, but only at a friends house. My question is, since repousse pitch is so blasted expensive (at least where I looked) are there alternatives? Thank you AB

When does one become the other? I only have limited experience with each. I have a project in my head: It's the imprint of a fist about 8" X 6" X 2" on flat sheet to be placed on the wall to look as though a giant was punching through from the other side. Either steel or copper, possibly dependent on the price of copper sheet when I hit the metal shop. Would you call it repousse or dishing??? (it's really a combination of both isn't it?)

I am unsure where to put this topic, so i put it in the most "artistic" area i knew of.... Has anybody tried jewelry making??? Either from copper, brass, bronze, coins, silver, gold, platinum, etc? I guess this is a form if metal working..... How did you do it; hot work or cold? Where did you obtain the material? Has anyone done inlaying on jewelry? Ever dabbled with setting precious stone in your work? What about decorative edging?. I ask so much because lately I've been thinking about do such as a hobby more so than heavy anything.... I have grown a fondness for delicate work as such since i got into the aviation business for a short time. I have made rings for a few …

We are working on art deco rail for a local bar restaurant. We copied the design out of a book on art deco ironwork with some slight changes. I did this with mostly with hammers and stakes. I also used a urethane block for the lining. A zip max would have been handy for this job. The material is 16ga navel brass copper would have been much easier to work. Total time about 6 hours. The edges will get folded over 90 deg to screw into the rail. It is about 5" by 6" and will be about 15' above the street.

I just finished my new chasing and repousse treadle hammer. I've been working on it for four or five days now. It is patterned off of Mark and Mindy Garnder's style of chasing hammer. Anyway, I got the final piece put on and since I've been dying to do some more chasing ever since I took Mark and Mindy's chasing class several months back, I did a funny little piece freehand right then and there. I didn't have time to scale or sand the material so this is like NO FINISH at all. I normally wouldn't leave so many obvious tool marks either. I had to get done and get to the house. However, I had a lot of fun, the hammer works great, and I am SOOOO excited about getting it pu…

Been coming to Iforgeiron for a while but just notice the coppersmithing section in the forum. I've been learning to raise copper bowls and have just begun to learn how to do chasing/repousse. I'm going to try to post pics of my first three chased/repoussed pieces. Maybe even a couple of my copper bowls that I raised on homemade stakes. Walker

One of my offbeat techniques; The needle scaler is generally not thought of as a tool that can be utilized as a creative instrument. I think it can also be looked at as a cluster of 19 tiny ball peens wailing at 4,600 BPM........... I once got a project to make a support for a BIG, 250lb 33'' x 44''antique cast iron fireback that would hold it upright and prevent it from falling forward. I thought it was cool and started brainstorming a way to copy the image.......Hmmm, sheet copper clamped over the thing and the needle scaler??? What the hay.......started out with the process by roughing it in with a rubber mallet then soon discovered the needles were too sharp......R…

This was for a garden fountain. She asked for a rustic look, thankfully. Behind the bowl can be seen the "stake" I welded up. Dimensions are D=38" Depth=12" Flange=1" I had to weld up two half-circles to get the proper sized blank. I decided I dont particularly like the way copper welds. It took me 4 days. The client is happy and it does'nt even leak. peace.

Mike Bendele's repousse bowl. He started with a piece of copper round stock (shown in the bowl) and then worked it into the bowl. Other pieces also shown. Mike is a 30-year veteran metalsmith and has been an instructor at Peters Valley and Touchstone.

Anyone have any suggestions for which gauges of copper sheet work well for someone that's teaching himself repousse? I'm having a ball with copper flashing, but would like to try for something thicker. -Jim
