The news just said gusts are topping 75 in Wasilla, more than 85 in Palmer and lots of area roads including the Parks Hwy are closed by drifting snow. Now, instead of lasting till 8pm tonight they think it'll last till 9am tomorrow. Temp's down to 1f and it's supposed to be around -9 -10f for a low.

A beer out of the fridge still feels cold. Of course I'm only going outside for another piece of firewood or walking one of the dogs. There's about 3" of drifting snow on the porch.

Trees are going down everywhere but most of the spruce is beetle kill, this may knock a bunch of it down.

Hot cocoa;   the hoped for high octane eggnog seems to have fled the stores ahead of us; so hot cocoa and a tot of rum will have to do.  First *real* shower; HOT water and our "regular"  fixings is a wonderful thing.  Luckily we are not getting the polar bomb our kids are seeing in the midwest.   Signs of a beneficent deity indeed!

A friend is supposed to escort me to the shop tomorrow.

Would have been drier if I stepped in the shower.

I can't deny that. Most days at the forge my wife makes me change shirts four to five times a day, and I could probably wring a cup of sweat out of each.

There's not much that scares me, but I think I'll just avoid the opportunity to experience REAL cold.

I'll take cold over hot and humid any day. It's easy to get warmer, put on more clothes and some of the new insulations are crazy good but you can only take off so much and if the humidity if very high sweat won't evaporate and cool you. Seriously guys which sounds worse, wear a coat and warm the car up for a few minutes or have smelly salt water oozing out of your hide in quantity?

The legal and social issues of taking off enough clothes for hot and humid weather, I say it’s harder to live and work in extreme cold even with appropriate gear and clothing.
High humidity tends to keep the temp down (90f/90%) vs low humidity (122f/6%).
cold and hot both tend to make you work slow and smart wile hot tends to make you fallow the shade and breeze cold tends to make you fallow the sun and hide from the wind.
I really hate wet cold.

According to the news, It was so cold that ...

It's raining BATS in Texas: Stunned creatures are plunging from underside of bridge as Lone Star State

Frozen Iguanas Falling From Trees in Florida

Nearly 200 sea turtles have died off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, freezing to death

In general, when the temperature dips below freezing, limit your dog’s outdoor activity to 10 to 15 minutes.

It was a 3 dog night:  The story goes that people who live where it gets REALLY cold sleep with their dogs to stay warm. A cold night calls for one dog, a really cold one two dogs, and a three dog night is one to be remembered.
