What did you do in the shop today?

It’s been a while since I’ve posted in this section. Here a a few things I’ve worked on in the past two weeks:

Stake anvil for a member of our Viking reenactment group who does chain male. 2” x 2” x 2-1/4”IMG_0344.jpeg.d6a5e29e4a4e7a686fe19365024c9875.jpegIMG_0345.jpeg.544ff1e638e8a3703e95aa7b957f0f81.jpeg

A new cold cut hardy for my shop. I destroyed my old one trying to improve it.IMG_0346.jpeg.d8664baa16739d3043a2cff49b221a0c.jpeg

Hardy bick for my shopIMG_0347.jpeg.9bfe546c389f0359e9db37c8b2c3d1c2.jpeg

I’ve been cleaning my shop up in preparation for an upcoming hammer-in and my coil spring inventory was taking up too much “floor” space, so I started straightening them to fit on my material rack.IMG_0348.jpeg.d9f44466b54e1f42290160da294a968c.jpeg

Finally, while I was waiting on the straightened springs to cool, I forged out a spoon as a test piece. No finishing work on it yet, only heavy wire brushing. (My younger son was trying to make a spoon, and was struggling material sizing…)

The third time I updated my results, they reported that I was a bearded dragon.

And judging from your profile picture, you’re now 100% shaved dragon!

I like the boss for Michael's shield but I'm having trouble with the perspective. The camera angle being straight down on it makes it hard to tell what feature is closer or farther. Even a little angle would help a lot.

I have personal experience with how much shows of love and support like this can make in a person's recovery. The symbolism is unmistakable and powerful. You're good at that kind of messaging.

Frosty The Lucky.

Finished my daughter's torch holder, hopefully i can get it into paint before Thursday. Supposed to warm up a bit this week so she may have to wait a couple days so i can paint it Friday when it will be in the mid 60's. 6F last weekend, close to 70F for Christmas weekend, gotta love this Ohio weather.

Here’s another photo (from before I did the inscription) that shows the shape a bit better.

What I was having trouble telling was if the inscription is on this side or the other.

Nice torch holder Billy. You could always tell her it's supposed to rust, it's an artistic statement.

Side view. You can see a bit of the inscription on the shoulder below the center dome.

I may clean up the side details a bit more, now that I’ve made that stake repoussé tooling.

Wife brought home the crud from school (common elementary school teacher problem), and after 10 days, I caught it.  Wife is binge watching "Below Deck."  After 5 hours, I couldn't take anymore.  Weird rich people and narcissistic young crewmembers. But this is all I had the energy to do.  Clay Damascus.    Actually, I was going to go through the steps of making a hammer, but no energy.

Been counting down the hours until I can go to bed.  Only 5 more to go.

John, what gauge of sheet metal did you start with to raise the boss?

Thx, G.

16, and it actually started life as a yarn bowl blank. However, the commission arrived when it was only half formed, and I realized that I could use the eight flutes of the initial shaping as the basis for the eight-pointed star.

Meanwhile, the boards are glued up, and I’ve been trimming the edge pieces, determining their final positions, and marking them for rivet holes.

Test fitting of edging pieces after planing the boards and cutting them round.

Looking good John. Stain or paint?

Frosty The Lucky.

The plan is to lightly char the surface and then rub it down with black paste wax.

I need to make a sheild now.   That looks great.

I made a pie server for the first time.   I  still need to finish the cleanup and file in the serations but I'm happy with it.  Going to see if it can serve pie tomorrow.  Have a great Christmas everyone.

Sound good John.

I like it Chad, that baby will lift a deep dish lead pie and will work a treat tonight and tomorrow. Food tastes better served with and on hand / home made utensils.

Frosty The Lucky.

Shhhhh! It's Christmas Billy, not a time to point out people's oddities.

Merry Christmas one and all, and happy festivus what ever your beliefs. Be good to each other.

Frosty The Lucky.

Merry Christmas all!

Being on holiday shut down at work for the next 2 weeks got a good day in the shop yesterday. So i made me a cross pien top fuller. Made from a piece of 1040 hex. And got a new kitchen knife i been working on hardened and into temper. 1095 for that 7" blade length.

Merry Christmas, all.

With FedEx, UPS, and Amazon routinely using drivers unfamiliar with our area, we've been getting a bunch of misdelivered packages.  Hoping it's just that the little "8" I have on the gate is just too small to see, I made a bigger one.  Painted it red, mounted it on a board painted white, and hung it on the fence today.

Maybe they'll see it now.

See some gatework waiting for you.

Mine numbers are drying, tomorrow i will put them up

Gatework is pretty far  off in my future.

Check with a paint supplier for "Retro Reflective" paint. Light shined on it will have a significant % reflected directly back at the source. Same as the lines on pavement, street signs, etc. It'll make your 8 stand out like a light bulb.

Frosty The Lucky.

Tommy Vee, we have a similar problem in that google maps says our property has through access into another neighborhood, so we get lots of people coming through our property even though there is no access. Just finished my first commission and a Christmas present for some friends. They give me horse riding lessons and I took some of the old horse shoes for the coat hanger. The fire place tools were my first commission, and I really enjoyed it.

Merry Christmas,

Asa

Very nice work Asa! I'm sure your first customer will be happy with them.

Really nice coat hooks Asa, well done!

The fireplace tools look good as well. I've found few people actually use log tongs but they DO sell sets.
