  1. Wow, that's a nice anvil. I hope you enjoy it. You're right that should be the last anvil you'll ever need. Does it weigh 289? I like the upsetting block too. I think it has "original RFP 1935" stamped on it and not PFP. I'm looking at a small cell phone though you may want to take a look at it. Nice anvil, I hope to have one as nice someday. Pnut
  2. Thanks. It's been so long since I've been around a farrier working. I used to assist the photographer at a few racetracks in the mid 90's and I don't think I've seen a farrier at work since then. I do remember that it seems like the farriers on the backside of the track had different names for a lot of things compared to farriers that worked on farms and with the public. I seem to remember them correcting me once when I called a shoe a shoe. I was told it was called a plate. I've never heard that anywhere else but at tracks. I can't remember any others off the top of my head but there was probably more. Pnut
  3. They are very similar. It's weird how function sometimes dictates form. Is the smaller pointed end used for making holes for the nails? Pnut
  4. Bam site has a pretty comprehensive free PDF about break testing and improving your heat treating skills. If you Google bam site heat.pdf it Should be the first result or at least it is when I use Bing Pnut
  5. Do you have your RR track mounted vertically? It will work a lot better than laying horizontally. I have a piece that's thirty inches and 115 pounds mounted vertically and it works pretty good. Definitely look through the improvised anvil forum and you'll get a better idea of what an anvil is. They don't have to look like Wile E. Coyote ordered it from ACME. Pnut
  6. Try a garage door spring. I think they're a little beefier than a screen door spring or maybe a couple of springs from a trampoline. Pnut
  7. If it transfer's too much vibration through the handle and you don't like wood handled punches there's always a rodded handle from 1/4 in. round. Pnut
  8. I don't know what part of Kentucky you're in but in northern Kentucky there's a place called Boone Steel in Walton that I use that will sell small amounts to the public. Their selection of tool steels is a bit limited but they have common tool steel alloys. The phone number is (859)493-0111 and they also have a website. Pnut
  9. It's official, the procrastinating has to stop. I went out to the jabod and I can't put off building a new one. It did have a good run though. It lasted sitting outside since February. I think that the hard freezes we've had was it's final death knell. I have all the materials to put a better one together thankfully. I left the cover off as it's supposed to rain tonight and the clay that wasn't vitrified was harder than I thought. Hopefully the rain will help because my back doesn't like digging clay. I'll post some pics when I get it done. Hopefully my body and the weather will cooperate so I can get it finished before I have to go back to work on Sunday. Pnut
  10. I'm not familiar with satanite but kast-o-lite 30 I believe you should spritz between each layer application and it likes to cure in a humid environment by putting the forge in an airtight container or a sealed garbage bag with a damp rag for at least 24 hrs. If satanite is different someone with experience using it I hope will correct me. As far as fiber blanket goes it needs rigidized prior to applying the castable refractory. A square forge like you've built with IFB lends itself to lining with a layer of ceramic ffiberboard and a coat of plistix on the walls and ceiling at least. I think that would be the simplest way to do it. Pnut
  11. The Kerr's I'm descended from that are in Australia were not willing emigres. They were sentenced to transportation and like most people who suffered that fate just stayed in Australia when the sentence was over. So troublesome I guess is a trait shared among the Kerr family. Pnut
  12. Mixing tube length is also affected by the diameter of the mixing tube. Nearly every problem with a T burner I've read about that isn't a tuning issue usually comes back to a measurement in the original build plan not being followed. Pnut
  13. John, I was confused. It's not the Kerr side of my family that is from Lincolnshire but the Bickers side of the family. You were correct that the Kerr's that I'm related to were from Scotland if you look back far enough but were in Ireland by the 1730's and from there emigrated to Australia and the US. Pnut
  14. Any piece of solid steel that's fairly heavy. Don't give yourself tendonitis using a hammer that's too heavy. Pnut
  15. I think his screen name is foundry guy Pnut
  16. That chair and Lawrence Welk bring back memories of my grandmother and the 1970s. Pnut
  17. Isn't an EVIL sourcerer that one guy who seems to show up and buy what you're looking for five minutes before you get there? Pnut
  18. Big bolts are good for more than their intended use. Texturing hammers is one that comes to mind. Pnut
  19. I stand corrected. I was confusing CO and propane 100%. Thank you Thomas, my file retrieval system is not what it used to be before the motorcycle wreck and the knock from the steel pipe. I confuse similar things quite often like one gas for another. Oh, the joys of TBI. Pnut
  20. Remember CO is heavier than air and will pool at the lowest point. If you're garage door is open to the house and there's a stairway by the door it could concentrate at the bottom of the stairs like a waterfall. Pnut
  21. Did you get the "stairway" twist by only cutting it on two sides like half of a cube twist? Nearly forgot to mention how nice and clean they both look. Was the copper done with a brush at heat? Pnut
  22. pnut

    Fly Press Sizes?

It may have expired or been lost in the upgrade. Pnut
  23. I second the opinion posted by Mr Griffin. I apologise if you're name is referencing a frisky mythical beast and Mr isn't the appropriate nomenclature. Pnut
