Super cool Dan. Watching with great interest. What is the function of the refractory and its shape? Is it just to hold the ceramic or insulation, flow? How is the refractory fastened to the plenum?

That is one sweet anvil. I might fill it with bondo or jb weld and see how well that holds up. Plus it would keep my eye from constantly going there. Out of sight out of mind so to speak.

Doubt it is 400+ pounds at that length. First number could be a 1 ? Looks like a nice useable anvil. Around here 3-4$ a pound considering the condition

The cost of used anvils in SOAZ is what caused me to buy new. I like the fact that nobody has abused it but me. no regrets except I wish I had saved a bit more and bought American but I am happy with the quality and I wanted a forged anvil for some unquantified reasons.

I picked up another post vise and thought I would share some info for those that might be interested. They both measure exactly 4-3/8” The old one on the right is stamped 50 on the movable jaw. It has a 1-1/8” screw and a 1” leg. The new one is stamped 45 on the mounting bracket and has a 1-1/16” screw and a 11/16” leg. although lighter the jaws are much beefier than the larger vise. i didnt really need the new one but it is really good condition and I might mount it on my welding table

Yup. It did shrink a bit and the hole is not quite square so its a bit looser when installed in one direction or another but it cant get stuck in any direction. i am going to try Mr. Wolfs tape suggestion

Just a follow up. Even though it bounces around a bit, I find that I use this bick fairly often and it has been a good addition to my tool set -fyi

Even if its cast iron it looks usable. Not so much for forging but shaping and forming, the horn would make a good mandrel and there is a lot of mass there. How much does it weigh?

Got home a bit early and gave it another try. Spent about an hour and a half. annealed it once now I really want to make some chasing tools and get some pitch I like the way the nose came out and was able to make some lips of sort

We named our forge when it was no more than a lively washtub, hair dryer and piece of rr track. We had recently attended a renaissance festival and my 8 yo named our forge "Olde Tyme Blacksmythe Shoppe" If I ever do a touchmark I want to do a stylized sundial using the letters O & T

Thanks for the brain power Bart, What do you know about the rectangular ones? They are also hard to move under hammer and make good punches I have found.

I would agree with scrap. Looks like it might have some usefulness For me 25 cents a pound max and I still dont think I want it

I have been trying to convince the Mrs. that I could forge in front of the tv. Still working on that one but I really want a coffee can forge for the garage. Time is what I lack most

I didn’t anneal it at all. I only had about 30 minutes on it and put my plumbers torch to it at the end to try to flame color it with disappointing results as shown. Thanks
