  1. I am with you DHarris. I have only made one pair and they broke after a few uses. Gotta say they looked a little better than yours though haha. Thank goodness for kens tong blanks
  2. Thanks George. I have a few big ones that i’ll try. I also have a bunch of garage door spring in 1/4” and 3/16”. All my little tools are made from the 1/4” quenched in oil and 2 trips through 450 degree toaster oven
  3. No Sir. Propane and a plumbers torch. It doesnt take much apparently. I didnt really need to get it glowing hot, pretty much when it turned dark purple - gray it was soft with or without quenching in water. i am going to make some little micro chisels this weekend for detail work.cant wait. repousse is very fun but its not forging and I love to smash
  4. Looks like a Trenton and in great shape. Very highly regarded anvils
  5. I agree with flat liner. Get a chunk of scrap steel and spend the extra money in tongs and tools to get started. Maybe one of those china anvils, heard they can be good for the money used anvils are like gold around here
  6. I dont understand the need for a vintage anvil. Its a tool so why pay new prices for a used tool unless you are a collector. considering the high prices of beat up anvils around here, I have no regrets shelling out $1040 for my new 165 pounder. it will be vintage when my great grandkids are using it
  7. Would like to see a picture. From what I understand that those mouse holes are some sort of anvil royalty and no has ever argued that fact.
  8. I will try some. I could start to feel the copper harden as I worked it. One thing I didnt show was the torch I brought to anneal them. I annealed them 4 or 5 times each and discovered I could get finer details after it hardened. I must have done it right as I had no tears. Its pretty hefty gauge though. Maybe 18 or 20 I think
  9. Nice. Looks like Yukon Cornelius or maybe Frosty.
  10. Anytime, here is a progress picture with the tools I used most. after getting the general shape dialed, I used the medium lining chisel, 2nd from left, and the little curved chisel for 90% of the detail work. I found that I need to refine and polish my tools a bit as you can see the tooling marks
  11. Thanks for the kind words fellows. Mr. Slag, do you really think so? I just kind of considered it messing around. i said to my self that I would like to try a life size face and know my head is spinning a bit thinking about the possibilities.....hmmmm Mr. Nodoubt, yes I drew it on with a sharpie first. The moon morphed a bit from the drawing like the butt chin my son recommended. I wish I had taken a picture of the suns drawing because it came out much closer to the drawing and what i had in mind
  12. Thanks gents. same here Frosty, I havent forged at the campfire yet but we camp alot and I wish I had discovered this earlier on.
  13. I spent the last couple days camping and I brought a bag of tools and made these guys I call them My Cheesy Moon and Sun Burn. was super fun to do and I learned a lot. Heres my set up. I tried to flame color the moon but the smoke kind of varnished it and I think its really cool looking finish. May try some steel wool to bring up some high lights. I really like how the sun turned out. My wife says his eyes bore into her sol. so easy and fun that every ine should try it thanks for looking
  14. Hi Nodoubt I have a bit. I havent had lot of time lately. I did this mostly from the back on this wonderful sand bag my son in law made me. I also bought a couple pounds of pitch but only got a few whacks in on one of the raised shell lines and one leg before it popped off. It was a fun experiment and I need to find the time to continue. Thanks for asking
  15. Thanks Thomas, good advice with trying the oil first
  16. Yes but I thought 1045 was water quenched. Will use oil next time
  17. First hammer = FAIL! quenched in water and cracked. Maybe because I only normalized it once. Maybe too hot. Not sure. I used it for a while and it works as intended in fact it works pretty well. i hit it very hard on my mild chunk and it feels and sounds good. Im happy with the hardness just not the cracks all in all I learned a bunch and will make another. This one is a bit too extended but I am happy and had a lot of fun. Thanks for looking
  18. My lovely wife left me for the weekend and I wanted to make a lining hammer so I started with a piece of 1” 1045. I bought this and some 4140 from the ebays, my first known steel. Moved pretty much like what I expected medium carbon to do, RR clips and such... used my new S7 punch made from a pharmaceutical pill punch I bought from Larry Z. Worked a treat used a couple different coil spring drifts to get to my new jack hammer bit hammer eye drift. Drift is a bit long used my guillotine and a lot of heats! as forged. Spent about 6 hours and did a bunch of other stuff including an S7 chisel and drift. Super happy so far and tomorrow I will grind, heat treat and handle. Cant wait and thanks for looking. I will update with finished hammer
  19. Nice one Lotso. Looks nearly unused
  20. If they were mine, I would forge three of the same thing and see if I could note then report the differences. I would like to hear what you you think
  21. Me too George. I still have mine that one looks to be be in very good shape. Dont put more than a three pound hammer on it and it will do what ever you need it to.
