  1. My old Tombstone stick welder was donated to me from a friend who closed his body shop 30 years ago. I learned how to weld with it and still use it for heavy stock welding. That's a very good choice to learn on.
  2. Harbor Freight has them from around $180 U.S. and up. I've had one for years and it will do light duty work, although the first one I bought failed after about a year (which they replaced). I would recommend looking for a used name brand MIG welder like Miller, Victor, Lincoln Electric or Hobart though. You would be money ahead in the long run. We bought a used Hobart Handler 187 with tank of gas, cart, 40 foot extension cord and tool box with tools for $600 and haven't touched the HF machine since.
  3. When my wife was in Ireland she struck up a conversation with a grounds keeper, talking about landscaping our place with large rocks. He said to her " you own land?" which is only for the rich there. He was dumbfounded that regular folks could own land.
  4. Welcome to IFI. Have you read this yet? It will help you get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST
  5. We won't remember that once leaving this post, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show it. READ THIS FIRST About the only thing I can tell you about the anvil is it's a Farrier's pattern and looks to be in very good shape. A wire wheel on an angle grinder will clean it up just fine and a coating of BLO will protect it. Two to three dollars a pound as for a value. BTW... Welcome.
  6. You have it however you should resize the pictures so they don't take up so much bandwidth\data. A lot of members have to rely on dial up or pay extra for data. You have 30 min to edit a post and double click the picture and a box opens up to resize. I use 500 for the width and tab over and it automatically resets the height. Your knives look good to me.
  7. Welcome to IFI. If you edit your profile to show your location, you may be surprised how many members are near you. This thread will help with getting the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST
  8. I have a set of them about a half inch wide. Good for sharpening but with the grit (embedded in Elmer's Glue) I have they don't remove much metal and a 2X72 is better.
  9. You must have missed the parts about adding your location, using the quote feature and resizing pictures. We are more than happy to help you get up & running. That's a good looking anvil, never heard of the name. Is the weight in pounds or kilograms.
  10. Welcome Toolart, have you read this yet? READ THIS FIRST It will help you get the best out of the forum.
  11. You did very well indeed, as long as the screw box isn't stripped and looking at the screw, I doubt that it is. When you post pictures you can double click on them and a pop up box opens that will let you resize them. I use 500 for the width and tab over for the height which will be selected automatically. I imagine one of the moderators will resize these for you, because the edit function only lasts for 30 min.
  12. I agree Thomas, I have a lot of respect for someone who asks for advise and actually heeds it (even if I'm stubborn and don't according to my wife).
  13. We built our forge because we had all the materials on hand, (old propane bottle, kayowool, burner, refractory, ridgizer etc.) due to our pottery side of the business that we closed years ago. If we had to go out and buy all the supplies we sure as heck would have bought the Diamondback. I'm not sure but I think the Diamondback still needs to be ridgized but that's minor.
  14. Good looking anvil even looks like the factory put a radius on the edges.
  15. Yep, heat index here in the Ozarks is 105 F expected to last through Friday. Had to grade the driveway after the heavy rains last week, riding on the tractor in the shade was a bummer, even with my sweat band & hat to keep it out of my eyes.
  16. The heat index here in the Ozarks is 105 F and will continue till Friday, good time to sit in the AC.
  17. In my opinion no. Read up on foundry's in this section. https://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/91-smelting-melting-foundry-and-casting/
  18. I can't imagine limbing all those trees with an axe. Bet you're relieved to get started though.
  19. Welcome to IFI. Have you read this yet? READ THIS FIRST I hope you have deep pockets to feed a beast like that. Or do you live where propane is free? My best advice is for you to read through Forges 101. BTW... you may want to edit the post to reduce the sizes of your CAD drawings. Huge pictures take up too much bandwidth\data, this is spelled out in the read this first thread.
  20. Welcome Nate, have you read this yet? READ THIS FIRST Pictures and where in the world you are located would help.
  21. Also a definition from the 1980's: Blacksmith's Air Conditioning-----Step away from the fire! ~ ThomasPowers
  22. There is a 30 min window for editing, also quoting the post just prior to your reply is frowned upon. The reason for that and large pictures is there are folks that have to rely on dial up internet and or pay for bandwidth\data and large pictures take up a lot and are very slow to load. More than likely one of the moderators will fix the pictures for ya. I imagine your MH has been imported from Britain or Europe. I don't think it's old enough for the AWI or War of 1812. Although because it dosen't have a pritchel hole it is old. I learned about the Broad Arrow while restoring old muskets. I just looked up the Broad Arrow codes and the Arrow with an O is accepted in 1942. The anvil is older but was probably pressed into service then.
