  1. A slice is a fire tending tool, similar to a spatula used in cooking. Here is a video showing how simple it is to make. Can be used for chopping up large chunks of coal or charcoal and moving the fuel around.
  2. Welcome aboard, I always suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST
  3. Probably because the Master locks I have are galvanized and the internals are brass.

  8. Welcome aboard...Bart Check out the Everything Else section for the OZ Roll Call. Heck I'll link it for ya. (never mind I see You already found it). You might also read this for help in getting the best out of the forum. It's full of tips like editing your profile to show your location so we won't dunn ya for it when answers require knowing where you are and our memories are short about that stuff. READ THIS FIRST
  9. When we changed satellite TV service the old co. took back the electronics but left dish. It's been sitting out by the shop for about 10 years now. Today I finally found a use for it on the prototype squirrel proof bird feeder hanger. One smart white squirrel figured out a way to defeat it by hanging upside down when the pvc pipe would roll him over, then scoot upside down to the feeder. Let's see if he can figure out how to get around the dish as a baffle. oh and they make good bird feeders too.
  10. A lot depends upon the employee outlook. Many years ago, prior to my retirement, we had an opening and I was involved in the interview process. The field was narrowed to two candidates. One had the attitude of "you pay me and I'll show you what I can do" while the other had opposite attitude " I'll show you what I can do and you can pay me". Guess which one got the job. That person came up through the ranks and is now Chief and still showing what he can do.
  11. From the pictures it's a different forge, a better mounting for the burner and carrying handle. The main thing to check is if the insulation is sealed with at least rigidizer, if it's soft there will be a health hazard of fibers floating around in the air causing serious breathing issues. The hose and regulator look ok as long as they are rated for propane.
  12. Welcome aboard Stephen. You may want to send Foundryman a PM, since he hasn't logged on since June 2019. Also I suggest editing your post to remove the picture and a lot of the text in the quote. All of that is explained here. READ THIS FIRST
  13. In the knife section (Knife Classes reference section) here there is a thread about getting good knife supplies if you can't find any local, including steel suppliers.
  14. If you do pick up some anthracite, check this thread out.
  15. Bored today so I fired up the forge. We have a squirrel problem raiding the bird feeders so I made a prototype of squirrel proof feeder hanger. The pvc pipe should rotate dumping the little tree rats off. If it works I'll paint the pvc black and I may make another out of heavier round stock because the 3/8 is a little bouncy. It took all of about an hour to make this one drawing out the end the feeder hangs from and the hinges.
  16. I am wondering if Satanite would work better for the burner block with no aggregate in it.
  17. Absolutely, just needs to be mounted and put to work.
  18. Welcome aboard, It's amazing how this forum can bring folks together. I recently conversed with a new member from Slovenia a country that my maternal grandparents came from. I always suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST It is full of tips like editing your profile to show your location.
  19. Welcome aboard Dave. I always suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST It is full of tips like editing your profile to show your location, which is important to know where in the world you are located because so many answers depend on location. Glad you posted this because we are always telling folks about that but it's nice to see someone who has used it with a review.
  20. Desk top computer cases, heavy gauge sheet metal are good for small pieces. I made an electrical 200 amp service panel front (that was missing) from one.
  21. Too little coal and maybe too much air. If I remember you are using black coal which may not be the best. If your coal does not coke up and is hard to light, it may be anthracite coal, which takes a different fire maintenance than bituminous coal. https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/60608-recommendations-for-working-with-anthracite/
  22. Our prayers are with you and your sister. Ringing the anvil in the garden three times. Don't worry about us, take care of your sister.
