  1. Yet we still have no idea where in the world you are located. That is important because so many answers require knowing your general location. Like where to get good blacksmithing coal, even in the U.S. that answer would vary greatly depending on location.
  2. I believe we have several threads here about them add site:iforgeiron.com to the search should bring them to the top of the page. I tried it and got 40 hits. Welcome aboard, have you read this yet? READ THIS FIRST It will help you get the best out of the forum with tips like how to do the most effective search like I just did and others like editing your profile to show your location because knowing where in the world you are located will bring more accurate answers.
  3. We used Satanite topped with bubble alumina and it works very well. Kast-O-Lite 30 is basically the same in one single coat, sold by IFI. https://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/254-gas-forge-refractories-and-supplies/
  4. Another way to get a switch for your welder, would be to take the old one out, take it to an electrical supply store (not a big box store) and match it up with a counter persons help. As an after thought, my old Lincoln Tombstone welder's switch was sticking (sometimes in the on or off position) I sprayed WD-40 in it and it has been working fine since then about ten years now.
  5. If the picture you posted is your vise, I doubt the measurement for the spring on my vise will do you any good for yours. Did you read the thread JHCC linked for you? Quoting a full post especially with pictures, just before your reply is frowned upon, and we still have no idea of where in the world you are located. OOPS Frosty & I were posting at the same time.
  6. It could have developed some rust between the fields & armature. Have you tried spraying WD-40 in it? I have had success with that in the past.
  7. I would test it for sure, nothing worse than having a grinder and no motor.
  8. We have a saying, "pictures or it didn't happen".
  9. I will ring the anvil in the garden three times, to ask for healing light and comfort to be sent to you both.
  10. Yep, after a quick google search there are several farrier supply sites selling that type.
  11. Welcome aboard, please read this..READ THIS FIRST It will help you get the best out of the forum with tips like editing your profile to show your general location, plus many others. In my area Vulcan anvils sell for around $2.00 U.S. per pound, unless it's in an antique shop who think it is made of gold.
  12. As you can see the refractory mortar is already cracking and flaking off exposing some insulation on the opening. It looks like the fiber blanket was not rigidized, which will be a health hazard with micro fibers floating in the air. I would wear a good mask and chip all the mortar out, rigidize the fiber blanket and put in a coat of Kast-O-Lite 30 or Satanite refractory then a coat of Plistix 900F wash.
  13. Another thing when matching one to the other, always match subsequent items to the first good one. If you match to others made that look good but have very minor differences the following will have the differences exacerbated. I learned that when making a bunch of scrolls, I would make one then make another matching it to the one just made. By the time I got to the tenth one it was no where near the good first one.
  14. Correct, I think that will help. Here is a picture of our forge running.
  15. One thing I was going to ask was how far do the burner flares extend into the forge. One mistake I made when building our forge was to have the flare exposed to the interior and the burner did get rather hot as the flare heated up. It also developed a lot of scale on the flare which made it difficult to remove the burner. By backing the burner up so the flare was about a half inch into the refractory it eliminated the problem, now the burner gets warm (about the temp of a cup of coffee) while running but not so hot as to worry me. One way to stop or slow down the chimney effect is to plug the air inlets when you shut the forge down, another benefit to plugging the inlets it keeps the critters out of the burners. Last summer we didn't use the forge for a while and mud dobbers had built nests in it. Our burner is a different design with an air choke that I now close when shutting down.
  16. Welcome aboard Gee, I always suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST - It is full of tips like editing your profile to show your location, which is important to know for accurate answers on so many questions depend upon knowing where in the world you are located. You may be surprised how many members are close enough to lend a hand. Some of the other hints may help in flying under the moderators radar. I'm sure the gas forge experts will be along to help with your question shortly. Who's plans did you follow when building the burners?
  17. Welcome aboard, we won't remember your location once leaving this post, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show it. READ THIS FIRST Someone with a copy of AIA will be along to verify the mfg date of that serial no.
  18. Welcome aboard... I can't help with your question but this thread will help with getting the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST It is full of tips like editing your profile to show your location, never know how many members are near you to lend a hand and many others, some will help with flying under the moderators radar.
  19. PWS... Your Grandfather is a treasure for sure and a handsome fellow to boot. My Grandfather never talked about his WWI experience either, but he did talk about serving with Gen. Blackjack Pershing in the Mexico campaign.
  20. Welcome aboard. I always recommend reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST I think Century (bought out by) Lincoln made the Power Kraft welders for Montgomery Ward. Check with a Lincoln dealer if you have one near you, where ever that might be. If you look inside the name plate should give the maker, Montgomery Ward did not make anything themselves.
  21. Unless they are in the burner clogging the orifice, ask Frosty.
  22. I thought the same thing. When I was a puppy I worked in an Italian restaurant that made wood fired pizzas and the oven was kept between 370°-400° F.
