  1. I've been using the Decibel 10 app on my phone. Assuming it's reasonably correct, it helped me get the sound level of my vacuum cleaner blower down to a much safer level.
  2. Mine is the same. The one on your anvil, Das, has an interesting resemblance to @Latticino's touchmark. Hmmm....
  3. Very nice. Pre-1830, I'd guess, judging from the absence of a pritchel hole.
  4. These were sitting on the chair in my office when I came to work this morning.
  5. The proportions and lines are a bit off to my eye, but I love the butt cap.
  6. May his memory be eternal. Blessings to you and yours.
  7. And that is why we keep a goodly supply of sports tape.
  8. I think the definition of total loss has changed from "How much will this cost to repair?" to "How much profit will we lose?"
  9. Please do. You have a gift.
  10. "What I've learned so far in my less than two years of blacksmithing: The blacksmith tool that SHOULD consume every aspiring blacksmith is the lowly tong. We all spend so much thought and effort on anvils and forges. I've learned that these really don't matter. Having the right tongs (or not having them) has turned out to be the single most important factor in my learning. The new people naturally focus on forges and anvils. The experienced smiths do so as well because they already have the tongs. I feel that we don't celebrate the lowly tong enough!" -- @Lou L
  11. If you can beat them to the slit-and-drift, that's even better.
  12. You do run into the occasional counterfeit anvil, from insufficient copyWright protection.
  13. "With a voice like that, you should go far. The farther, the better."
  14. You're going to find two types of steel wire in a mattress: the harder, thinner coil springs in the middle, and the thicker, softer binder wire around the edges. Neither one is particularly good for smithing (between their small dimensions and unknown carbon content), but the binder wire might be good for practicing S-hooks and similar basic projects.
  15. Yes. You could also say "Door pull with forged ring".
  16. Excellent little video. Thank you very much.
  17. There really is nothing better for polishing an anvil face than hammering hot metal on it.
  18. Just ran across a CL ad for "Antique blacksmith Anvil - $1000". The description is "Antique blacksmith anvil...24 inches long", and there's no photo. Sounds too good to be true!
